Good article.
I had been told the Jim Cirillo felt the Glock 20 sized platform would be well suited to the .40 S&W cartridge. The article shows that he did indeed experiment with the combination.
I'm goin to allow you two to get away with that this time :) Lee
Yeah great read.
If a man with the experience of Jim likes it that says a lot. Everything I've read about the man said he just used what worked.
My G20 .40 conversion is more comfortable to shoot that my G17 with duty style handloads.
My G29sf fits my hand better than the G23 frames. They seem a smidgen small in my hand.
Jim favored the "Pin Grabber" loads. If I remeber correctly, he like the "sawtooth" action of the bullet because it tended to "bite" into bone (particularly skull bone) when fired at low angles instead of caroming off the target.
This was an old 1992(?) article.
The thing that had me looking for the conversion barrels was the availability of brass which was being left behind at the range 40S&W and 357Sig along with the various calibers. The 40 and 357 became the prominent choice because they could be used from the same magazines.
My initial conversion barrel swaps started with the S&W1006, getting the Bar-Sto "Match Grade" 40S&W (1991) and 9x25Dillon (2008), which I hand fitted to my gun, as neither were drop-in conversions. The 9x25 required a final chamber reaming to properly headspace.
Yep! I have several barrels for the G-29 to mess with, the 10mm and 40S&W Storm Lake and the 357Sig and 9x25Dillon from LWD all factory length and they work well and do add to the flexibility of the platform.
That being said I added the 6" 9x25 Dillon and a 6' 9mm LWD barrel setup for the G-20 and looking to add the 6" 10mm, 40S&W and 357Sig soon just because.
Being a handloader and a bullet caster, this has been another way to get the most from these platforms! ;D
Does the 9x25 do okay from the G29 barrel? The little I have read about it seems the longer barrel makes a difference, and it works great with a compensator.
All the aftermarket barrels for the G29 are on my Amazon wish list. :)
Lone Wolf Distributors has the G29 stock length 9x25 Dillon barrel on closeout, but is it worth it? I have read the 9x25 benefits from a longer barrel, would I still have a "blast" with the 3.78 inch/96mm length? Should I just wait an spend the extra $30 and purchase the extended/ported barrel?
Nothing I was anticipating doing soon, but "closeout" price has me considering buying the barrel for now.
Thank you.

Case capacity vs. bore volume. The 9x25 does thrive in longer bores, but that isn't to say it isn't substantial in shorter bores. If you load your own, load for lower volume (faster powders), optimal for your barrel length. Otherwise, it's .357 Sig performance with a (much) bigger roar. While the ported barrels are appealing, they defeat the advantage of compact length, but do well to tame muzzle rise and recoil (which is minimal, IMO). If you intend to load full power charged for longer barrels, porting will make use of the excess gas. In my experience, a 6" barrel (non-ported) is still too short, while 9" is about right for maximum, practical performance. Much depends on the reason you are considering the cartridge. A 3" .44 Mag flame thrower is a lot more power than a 3" .44 Spl. If it's the entertainment value you are after, forget about the question and just do it. Flame throwers are fun.
I have the stock length 9x25Dillon for the G-29 and it works well but the longer barrels (6") do bring out the true potential.
As mentioned careful powder selection helps to utilize the potential from the 3.78" barrel, IMR800X is a powder that works well.
I trying to test some BE-86 in the 9x25 to see how it will compare to Power Pistol.
Need to test from the shorter G-29 3.78" barrel in the near future...
CFE Pistol and AutoComp are also showing good test results.

Good to hear it works well, and it would be for entertainment. :)
