Title: C.O.P. 155 gr + Power Pistol
Post by: fltbed on December 07 2015 02:17:12 AM MST
Picked up a bag of there all copper Barnes like JHP's
Average weight was almost exactly 155 grains.  The diameter has a slight taper to it with the base of the bullet measuring .399 tapering up the shank to .400 where the mouth of the case would be.

I can't figure out how these boutique companies are getting 1500 f.p.s. with these all copper 155's, they take up a lot of space in the boiler room.  I worked up as far as I'm gonna go with Power Pistol as I was starting to see some minor case web expansion.

C.O.P. 155 gr HP
10.0 gr Power pistol
Starline Brass
CCI 300 primer
OAL 1.255

RIA 5" barrel: 1325 f.p.s. ES 32 SD 18

G40 6" barrel 1360 f.p.s.

Might try Longshot next.

See if Shadow did a pull down - Might give you an answer to powder & charge.

For that weight #7 & Longshot are giving me (5.15" barrel) highest fps.

1,500 w/ 155 is fast :)

Longshot will give you a few more fps, but I think to get to 1500 fps the load will be in pressure ranges with which I am not comfortable.

Yea, I'm with you on that.  Some of the published max loads out there are higher than I'm comfortable shooting.

But then again, I started handloading in the late 70's when the loading manuals stated bluntly "these were our max loads with what we have.  It's up to you to figure out what's max with what you have."  Sometimes your max load in your gun was higher, sometimes it was quite a bit lower.  And everybody accepted that it was all on you!

My target velocity with these is 1400 f.p.s. but I'm not willing to add any more powder just to say I got there with Power Pistol.  I'll try something else.

Also we learned to start and work up.  Unlike today where too many guys think any book load is safe in their gun, so they start at the max load cause "more better".

Let us know how it goes with Longshot.

Yes the Pull-down was done and tested...http://10mm-firearms.com/factory-10mm-ammo-pull-downs/buffalo-bore-barnes-155gr-tac-xp-pull-down/ (http://10mm-firearms.com/factory-10mm-ammo-pull-downs/buffalo-bore-barnes-155gr-tac-xp-pull-down/)

That compressed Loading was Buffalo Bore's 10mm with the Barnes 155gr TAC-XP and 11.0 grs Power Pistol. :o
Buffalo Bore data;
This is a full power 10MM load that is within SAAMI spec and is thus safe for use in ANY/ALL 10mm pistols. Loading this long-for-weight all copper bullet in the 10MM case, causes powder capacity limitations that we do not experience with shorter/heavier lead alloy bullets and thus our advertised 1500 fps velocity cannot be reached, regardless of how may internal ballistics charts tell us that we should be able to launch a 155gr. bullet @ 1500 fps from a 5 inch barrel, that long light weight bullet simply uses too much of the available case capacity to do so.
1455 fps - Custom 1911 with Nowlin 5 inch barrel     Energy 728 ft.lbs
1429 fps - Colt Delta Elite, 5 inch barrel        Energy 702 ft.lbs
1401 fps - Glock Mod 20,  4.6 inch barrel        Energy 675 ft.lbs

I duplicated that loading for Intercooler using a 155 gr COP (Copper Only Projectile) a similar all copper HP to the Barnes.

His resultswere; COP 155gr All Copper HP 11.0gr's Power Pistol (Buffalo Bore load) 1422, 1435, 1456, 1413. Average = 1431.5 FPS/ 706 LBS. Really happy with this level of performance and would love to see them in gel!

One load with standard (XTP) JHP reached 1,504 w/ 5.15" barrel.

That load has been backed down a bit.

I'm sure I'll get there again, jut under different protocols :)

800-x seems like a good powder for 155 grains

Anyone care to post a length for the COP 155 gr projectile?

Intercooler got the COP as loaded ammo but I pulled them and loaded them to BB specs for him.

So, from an available space this is the same as loading a 230 grain lead bullet.

Setback would be a huge concern when testing these loads.  Even a small setback will skyrocket pressure.

It doesn't leave any room for deviations does it!  :o

I took my last ten of these and loaded them up with Longshot.  Stopped by the range on the way home and tested them out before the sun went down.  Only tested them in the Rock as I'm afraid to shoot the really hot stuff in the factory G40 barrel.

C.O.P. 155 gr all copper HP
New Starline brass
CCI #300 primer
OAL 1.255

10.0 Longshot
Velocity 1350 f.p.s. ES 66 SD 26

10.2 gr Longshot
Velocity 1332 f.p.s. ES 61 SD 21

That's not a typo, the average velocity dropped 18 f.p.s. by adding 0.2 gr more powder. :o

If anyone wants to buy a bag of these and pick up where I left off, feel free.  I'm not sure when I'll get around to revisiting this again.

fltbed have you tried the Buffalo Bore loading of 11.0 grs Power Pistol listed above?
I loaded this load for Intercooler and myself and duplicated the BB results precisely. :D

No, I didn't work up that high.

I took a SWAG at a start load of 9.4 gr and worked up to 10 gr, when I had two cases out of five expand a bit more in the web than I'm comfortable with in the G40.  (maybe it's time to invest in a LW barrel)
The brass fired from the Rock looked fine and I probably could go up more in that gun but it's so much more fun having ammo I can shoot in both with no worries.

I have no regrets as I learned a few things like:
These bullets are a bit undersized so you have to remember to back out the expander die almost all the way.  Otherwise, you won't get enough bullet grip and this is a load you defiantly don't want any setback with.
Longshot sucks with this bullet also. >:(
Power Pistol is an underrated powder and I should experiment more with it in the 10.

I'll probably revisit this bullet down the road and who knows, I might just get them up to 1400 f.p.s. without having to chuck my brass in the recycling bin afterward.
