Title: What a bunch of BS
Post by: sqlbullet on December 05 2015 02:47:12 PM MST
http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/most-heavily-armed-states-in-america/

This article claims Washington DC is number 2 in the nation for guns per capita.

They also claim that my home state of Utah is at around 12 guns per 1000 people.

Just the guns in my safe would bring my street up to almost 1 gun per person.  And I am certainly far from the only gun owner on my street.  And I live in a VERY liberal neighborhood by Utah standards.

Can anyone else figure out what they are basing this data on?

Digging a bit, it looks like this is based on firearms registered under the NFA.  So, fully automatic weapons, SBR's, Short barreled shotguns.  Makes much more sense, though I don't know what that has to say about anything.

Especially since they are including NFA items owned by agencies.

My parish (county to others) has a large ownership of guns per capita because this is still hunting land and a larger spill over of people who moved away from New Orleans.  Oh yes I'm doing my part... ::)

Yep, REGISTERED firearms.  What qualifies as registered?  Red Ryder BB guns likely have to be registered in DC, so they would be high on the list.

It would be more a list of Short Barreled Rifles more than anything else.

No, the article specifies guns that are on the NFA registry.  So, machine guns, SBR's, etc.

I knew their had to be something screwy going on with this list.
It says there are only 88K guns in PA???

How can we have 2 million hunters sharing 88 thousand deer guns???

If that was directed at me, I was just believing SBRs would outnumber the rest by a wide margin, especially since the AR kick, along with suppressor popularity.  I'd guess at least 10 to 1 in numbers.

I am guessing they excluded suppressors.  The purpose of the article seems to be to make gun owners seem like a crazy "fringe" element.  So they used the most restrictive registry they could find and then would have removed anything that isn't a gun.  It is interesting that they left agency owned guns in the numbers.

IC, the wikipedia page is much more believable to me.  While I think in my home state we have plenty of guns to equip everyone, that chart seems to be tracking the ownership rate, not the guns per capita rate. I would guess that slightly less than half the people on my street own any guns.  And, among my wife's siblings, I don't think there is a gun owner at all.

Irrelevant. They hand-pick through thousands of available databases to develop the statistical basis that fits the agenda. The data(base) is a culmination of known values, while the statistics only reflect a narrow rendering of the selected data (according to a carefully scripted formula). 92.6% of all statistics are fabricated at the time of necessity, but must align with the agenda to be effective. The factual data is irrelevant to the statistical-fact. The ignorance of the populace enables the statistical manipulation by those promoting the agenda.

FORM 4473 ,  1st page of the link - NOT  NFA items

"ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census Bureau."

Couple of problems with the idea it is based on form 4473.

First, those forms, but law, don't leave the local FFL unless there is a trace request or the FFL goes out of business.

Second, even the forms that do get taken to the ATF under the two reasons above, they are not allowed to computerize the record.  In order to compile statistics on them, someone would have to spend huge manpower in a warehouse with clipboards doing tally's.  And even then the sample would be a tiny subset of the records.

Third, the amount of guns they are reporting per state are laughably low for 4473 items.  As one person pointed out there are almost twice as many deer hunters in their state as the reported number of guns.  I can't image those guys are sharing guns on the hunt.

Fourth, in my home state of Utah they report 44,000 registered guns.  But there are 1.2 million gun owners in Utah, most of whom own more than one gun. Again, sharing?

Fifth, the National Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR) is the name of the database the ATF is authorized to create by the 1934 NFA, which tracks items that have an ATF tax stamp.

All the data points alight that this is NFA registry, not form 4473.

I automatically discount EVERYTHING this radical president and all of his minions in his federal government claim.  When they say something, I don't necessarily know what the actual truth is but know it is NOT what they are saying and putting forth.

As a result, they (and do) can ANYTHING they want  ???

Which would also include every firearm registered to a Private Personal Protection Service, AKA, Bodyguards. Since we are speaking of DC, that would probably account for a HUGE number of firearms.
