Title: The Colt 1918 B.A.R
Post by: BEEMER! on November 22 2015 11:51:11 AM MST
Colt has an ad on page 42 of the December 2015 American Rifleman showing a Semi-Automatic BAR.  No price, availability,or any other info.

I wonder if US Armaments who builds the Gatling Guns is going to make them?

Added later:

Someone on the Colt Forum says they are built by Ohio Ordinance.  About $8K

You found it I see.  I had read about these as well.  Way outta my price range.

Very neat firearm, but not very practical.

What do they weigh, 36 pounds if I recall right?

The different variations had different weights.  The most common was 19lbs.  One model was as high as 24lbs.  The lightest was 15lbs.

I don't think Colt makes these. The only manufacturer I could find is Ohio Ordnance Works. The cheapest model runs $4,300.00. For that kind of money in a semi-auto .30-06, I'd rather get one of their modified 1918 BAR H.C.A.R. rifles with it's 30rd magazines and 16" barrels. That rifle looks a lot more practical than the regular BAR with the lighter weight, shorter barrel, rails, and 30rd magazines.

Ohio Ordnance makes a beautiful reproduction. I've always wanted a 1918 BAR. My Dad was issued a BAR in WWII and told me how well it shot. He never got into actually using it in combat and I'm fine with that. Some things are better left unsaid.

to make it lighter and handier you can do what Bonnie & Clyde did to the B.A.R. s they stole from the armory. saw the barrels off! :o   I would love to have a B.A.R. but not at that price! and for a semi auto too.

An M1A is a modernized BAR. It is lighter than the BAR, and uses a shorter cartridge. The 7.62x51 cartridge in an M14 is/was suppose to have the identical ballistics to a 30-06 in an M1 Garand.

Both the M1A and BAR are almost useless. Too light to be heavy machine gun and too heavy to be a light machine gun. Worthless as a medium machine gun.
