Title: Glock Grip Mods
Post by: sqlbullet on November 09 2015 09:37:09 AM MST
I am curious what you guys think of the various DIY (or professional) Glock grip mods.  I handled a Zev custom glock this week, which was pretty sweet.  I am about to pull the trigger on a Glock 20 Gen 3 or SF.  And I am a tinker kinda guy.  And I don't really care for finger grooves on my grip.

Anyone have a Glock with grip mods, and if so how do you like it?

Before permanently disfiguring a new (unmolested) pistol, I suggest some temporary mods for testing. In my experience, finger grooves, as well as other ergonomic features, disappear during serious combat situations (as does report, recoil and muzzle flash). Unless you have small hands, the finger grooves can be reduced significantly by simply using the Pachmayr Tactical Grip Glove (#05164). They have a finger groove relief, rather than exaggeration. And before pulling the trigger on a stippling job, stick-ons can simulate the feel. These are much less expensive (and less permanent) "testing" options. Just handling a modified pistol is far from actually firing it. I like the feel of a rasp-y grip, but it's really not a significant issue in a combat situation, in my experience. The Gen 3 and 4 grip texturing is quite effective, out of the box.

Thanks!

I agree that handling and shooting are very different.  My Para had skate board tape on it when I bought it.  I thought I liked it until I went to the range and it chewed on my hands for a couple hours.  I have always thought stipling might have a similar issue.

I also have noticed that I don't notice the finger grooves on my G29...But I never have.  I definitely notice them on the G20/21's I have held though. I will have to check out the Grip Glove.

I have several glocks that are stippled and not to aggressively and they don't chew your hands up. I personally think and have had others say it looks good. But like you I like to "tinker" and that was one "mod" that I felt was needed.

I have "ground" on all of mine!!  :o :o

I like the Dremil and a 1/2" sanding drum.

I saw a case awhile back where the poster's pet dog had gotten ahold of their Glock and chewed it up.  It looked like a very aggressive stippling. :)

I suspect that the dog would have quit chewing pretty quickly if it had been a M1911 or some other metal firearm. :)

Personally, I would not make any modification that I could not easily return to stock configuration.  Especially on the frame of a firearm where you can't just simply get a new one for little cost without paperwork involved.  With a gun with removable grips like the M1911, you can cut your own grips and make them fit your particular hand.  If you don't like what you end up with, just toss the wood and go back to the original grips.  No real money lost in the process.  If you screw up taking a sanding drum to the Glock, you're going to be buying a new frame.

The only mod that I've done to any of the Glocks that I own is to convert a G21 to .460 Rowland power level, but still using .45 ACP / SUPER brass.  I call it my .45 SUPER +P+.

I blew up a G20 and I'm glad what material was not removed.  My hand made it through, the frame did not.

I do not do mods like stippling or the like that make permanent changes... You want great grip on any gun? get some talon grips. Only my fde 22 does not have them, and it will probably stay bare.

Robar does a great job in grip modding, especially Glocks. While you're at it, if you send a pistol to Robar, get their NP3 treatment.

Both mods are not inexpensive... but you get what you pay for, very high quality and assuming you're going to keep the pistol, these mods will pay for itself with greater comfort and ever improved reliability for years to come.

Also, ever try to sell a modded pistol? there is no market for  them, pretty much the same for most modded cars. You never get back what you put into them.
Honestly i find it hilarious that all these companies offer mod work that actually seriously devalues the gun for such high prices. Its not rocket science.. its melting a texture into plastic.

I get the resale aspect.

At the same time, I learned a long time ago not to sell a gun.  There has only been one I didn't miss - Ruger P89.
