Title: RCBS 10-10 Scale
Post by: cwall64 on October 31 2015 08:59:31 AM MDT
I was at a local store and they are trying to clear out the 10-10 scale for $99.  Is that a good price to grab a backup scale for?  I have an 30+ year old Ohaus 10-0-5, but just worried one day it might crap out...

cwall64, while the 10-10 at that price is a great deal.  There shouldn't be any reason your other scale would crap out unless you dropped it and damaged it.  I have the RCBS 5-10 balance beam as made by Ohaus since 1978 and is as accurate today as it ever was.  I trust it more than any digital.  :D

I picked up a cheap Frankford Arsenal digital just for finding unknown weights faster.  It agrees with my balance beam scale precisely.  However the Frankford Arsenal only registers even numbers in the 1/10ths for grain weights...The other thing is it needs to be re zeroed often as it will drift.  ???

Great scale, great price.  But, no reason you need a back-up IMHO.  A mechanical balance is not likely to break unless you drop or throw it.

Thanks for keeping $99 in my pocket!  I have been using the old scale all morning, and thinking why did I even ask...

I almost bought a second 10-10 but bought a weight set to validate  the 10-10 with instead.

That would be a good investment if you don't have weights for checking the 10-10.
