Greetings to the board. I am from the front range of Colorado and have been shooting one thing or another for about 50+ years. My wife and I recently picked up a Glock 20 (hers) and a Glock 40mos (mine). So far range time has been with 10X and some off the shelf factory target loads . We are both playing with red dots and really enjoy the 10 in both Glocks.
Which brings me to my question, in searching for hunting loads, are there any I should stay away from when using the Glock? Fellow Glock shooters, do you have any pet loads (setting up to reload the 10).
Thank you.
What are you hunting? Prob diff round for deer or hog I would think ( heavy HC for hog )
First, haven't found any rounds 155gr or above ( commercial ) to cause problems in my stock G20,( tho some Hot loads may call for a heavier spring ).
Some of my best rounds are 'copies' of the pull-downs in the ammo area ( http://10mm-firearms.com/factory-10mm-ammo-pull-downs/ )
A wealth of data there ( kudos to shadow ) I tend to drop the copied load 10% for testing and work back up
I tend to use XTPs in 180 and 200 with 800x powder for my hotter rounds ( 800x usu must be hand-weighed )
Practice rounds are almost all Blue dot and xtreme plated .
Have use some hard cast in the stock barrel ( not large amount ) without problems
good luck, enjoy
AZ1955, Welcome to the forum! Yes the Pull-Down sections have documentations of what was found in the commercial loadings. If you are just starting out with handloading, take some time to know your equipment and especially your scale. The scale is the most critical part of the equation. You could match up for your own loads if you are attentive to the details.
Like Tommac919 mentions, those Hornady XTP bullets are tough and do work for hunting purposes and I like the 200gr XTP for that reason. Glock advises against using lead bullets in there products, but I have used my own cast bullets from my G-20 and G-29. I size my 10mm/40 cal cast bullets at 0.4015" and am using quality lube, I also check and clean up to be sure there is no alloy buildup, that could lead to higher pressures. Many guys are using poly paint coated bullets these days for cheaper target play.
If you have any questions be sure to ask. Enjoy your new guns and handloading.
Best regards! :D
Welcome to the forum.
Like Shadow, I have had no issues with cast bullets in my Glock 29. IMHO the first issue is guys shooting cast bullets that haven't checked their guns bore size. Glocks run fat, with most slugging between .401 and .4015. I size my cast bullets about .4025 these days.
XTP's are a great choice as well, and for thin-skinned game Nosler JHP's are very economical.
Longshot and Blue Dot are my go to powders for 10mm for best velocity in heavier bullets. Power pistol is on the shelf to try. Unique gets the tap for mid-range loads.
The pull downs are a great reference! be sure to check them out.
