Title: P220 10 DA/SA, DW Razorback 10 or STI Nitro 10
Post by: SamC on September 27 2015 03:53:19 PM MDT
I have decided to take the plunge and buy a 10mm auto pistol. So far I have narrowed it down to three guns, Sig p220 10 da/sa, DW Razorback or STI Nitro 10. I will use it for range work, occasional self defense and black bear protection in our summer place in the Adorondack mountains. I shoot 1911's very well and I have a p220 da/sa with an srt trigger that I shoot well so no real preference there. What I want is a good shooter that can take the punishment of heavy loads. Any informed advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Sam

Dan Wessons are made in NYS.

Sig is better but it is big and heavy.

Of those three I would pick the DW unless you really wanted DA/SA.

I have a DW V Bob and like it so I'm a DW fan but I'm curious,  among 1911's, why Dan Wesson over STI Nitro?
Thanks, Sam

I just like the fit/finish and quality of the Dan wesson over STI in the "mid-grade" 1911's.    The STI's are great guns, but they always feel just a bit more mass produced to me.  That could totally be my bias though as I have loved Dan Wesson since I was a wee lad.  A Dan Wesson revolver with a 22 conversion kit was the first handgun I ever fired.

I was also looking at those 3 options and ended up with the Sig P220 DA/SA Reverse two-tone with Sig night sights. This is the Lipsey's Distributor exclusive. I never had a Sig, or any DA/SA before. Shot it last week. I am IN LOVE.  I also have a G-20SF with KKM stock length barrel, that doesn't Eat just everything. The 220 shot 5 or 6 different loads without an issue.
Armscor 180fmj to break it in ,then Underwood 180 &200 grn.fmj, Underwood 200 grn Hardcast,  Doubletap 200grn hardcast, and Underwood 180grn. XTP.  The gun was a Pleasure to shoot, was Very accurate. The SRT trigger was Fantastic. I almost got the SAO version, but I am really happy I went with the SRT DA/SA.  Good Luck in your Quest!   T

I own the SIG P220 Elite (DA/SA).  Of my three 10mm's, it has become my favorite.   The thing is built like a tank.   It is not light by any means.   I'm not sure how much your other choices weigh, but you may want to include that in your criteria.   That being said, it has operated flawlessly.   Chamber a round, press the decocker and holster it.  Immediately ready when you are.   And it can use the P220 .45 acp magazines - including the 10 rounder - for lots of 10mm goodness.

Oh my others are Glock 20sf and Kimber Custom Eclipse II

Yeah, of the 3 guns the OP listed, I'd buy the Sig DA/SA even though I'm not happy with the stingy 8+1 mag capacity.

I look at the choice from the viewpoint of practical duty use or daily CCW. None of the choices listed is especially "light-weight," and the STI is an overpriced gamer-gun.  As for the DW, while 1911 10mms are nice, they need to be set-up right to run well over the long term.

For practical use right out-of-the box, that leaves the Sig.

And so far, the field reports on the various Sig 10mms seem to indicate they shoot well and run without issues on real 10mm ammo, ... which is how it should be with any pistol chambered for this cartridge.

I have a Para Ordnance Hunter 6" long slide 1911 I picked up several months ago and absolutely love it. I have been
a 10mm fan ever since the cartridge came out and shot the heck out of a S&W 1006 until I got this new pistol. You
are lucky as I always loved the Adirondacks and for 5-6 years rented a summer cabin on 6th lake and did a lot of
hiking around Racquette and Blue Mountain lakes. I was transferred to KY and now go to the Great Smoky mountains
to hike, but they are way different than the ADK's and miss them.

NYS is amazing.

You have NYC, Long Island, the ocean the LI sound the Great Lakes the Hudson, the Erie Canal, the Adirondacks, Lake George. Tons of fishing and hunting.

Just getting too expensive.

Then come south to New Jersey and it gets even more expensive.  :o

Northern Jersey smells, the southern part is actually pretty much country.

I was looking at a SIG P220 a couple weeks ago in 10mm but it was SA only and had adjustable sights.  Nice looking pistol.  It was about $1.1K as I recall.  I would go with the DW myself.  I have a 2009 DW Classic in 10mm and it is nice.

I've had a Sig P220 Elite for about a month and after running various loads from target to hunting levels I'm absolutely amazed at its function and accuracy. Along with the Sig I shoot a PARA Elite Hunter & EAA Witness Hunter and find them all to be superlative, although I'm really warming up to the Sig as the best carry gun, regardless of the weight and especially with its smooth double-action.

If you want to go top o the line, Dan Wesson now makes the Silverback.
My Custom SilverBack is a very solid and well built 10mm
