Was shooting my new Glock 40 and found my RIA 1911 in 10mm in bag also. Had HSM 10mm and it shot a full mag in RIA, no problem.
When I started using my reloads, It would not feed from magazine and slide lock back approx 2 times per magazine of 9 rounds. That load is Longshot at approx 9.1 grains with Bayou 180 grains.
I know that my load is way stronger than the HSM load.
So, you 1911 gurus out there, what should I do to make my pistol more reliable. Oh Yeah, Wilson 10mm mags.
whats your OAL of your reloads
Don't know precisely. I normally try to be 1.25 to 1.255
whats it doing when you try to close on a fresh mag?
Feeds fine every time on a fresh mag. Its usually in the middle of the mag. 3 to 6 rounds in.
1911 premature slide lock on a partial magazine
After making sure that your thumb or other appendage is not pushing up on the slide lock while firing... :)
Take the slide off and reinstall the slide lock onto the frame. Load some of the magazines that you having troubles with, with some of your handloads. Insert the magazine in the well just like you are used to doing.
Now looking down at the top of your pistol examine where the part of the slide lock that engages the magazine follower is in relation to your loads. If they are touching or pretty close to touching you have probably found your problem. If your handloads are in spec, then being very careful, use a small hobby metal file and start filing just very small amounts from where the slide lock engages on the follower. I take a couple of swipes with a file and then put it back on the pistol with an empty magazine, make sure it engages fine then switch out the empty magazine with your loaded magazine to make sure you are clearing your rounds. You want to make sure that you leave more than enough to engage the follower, but leave a comfortable enough gap to not engage on your cartridges when the magazine is loaded. I can't stress this enough, do not want to take too much off, or you will be looking to buy a new one from Brownells or Midway.
I had the exact same problem with my new Kimber Custom Eclipse II. This solved the problem in just a couple of minutes.
If you notice it around the same number of rounds each time (4th round, 3rd round et ) load a magazine, fire off the rounds that lead up to the FTF, but pull the magazine and Measure the OAL of the rounds remaing in the mag to see if they are "growing" as recoil dislodges the bullets from the case.
I had to grind my slide lock to stop it from locking open. It was easy to see the marks left on the inside of the lock where the projectiles where hitting it. As mentioned above remove the slide and insert a loaded mag to check the clearance.. or lack of.. adjust as needed.
took gun to my gunsmith. He put dimple in slide stop. Polished feed ramp. Smoothed edges of feed ramp. Maybe some other things I can't remember.
(He is a 1911 guy among his skills) Shot gun for most of a magazine the other day and it worked flawlessly. Its a little early to call it cured. But looking good.
