Title: Steel Challenge?
Post by: Raleigh on August 17 2015 06:37:07 PM MDT
My intention when I had my Delta built was to use it as my primary pistol for Steel Challenge matches.
After shooting it for the first time yesterday I am confident I made the right choice.

Now I am by no means a great shooter, but I was able to shoot 6" groups at 30 yards free hand, I could never come close to that with my .45.
I was shooting fairly fast as well, just enough time to pick up the front sight, reset and fire.

The next match is next Monday and I am really looking forward to shooting this one.

Anyone else shoot these types of matches?
Do you use your 10mm to shoot them or a different pistol?

Well I shot the steel challenge last night and had a blast!

The gun performed really well, no FTE or FTF, I did not perform as well  :))
The gun did have 3 instances of the trigger physically not coming back out of the frame after firing.  After the match I stripped it down completely and pulled the trigger out.  I found that the bow was tight on 2 of my magazines so I opened the bow up just a touch and now it has good clearance on all of my mags.

Anyhow, the steel challenge is 125 targets, I shot 160 rounds, so 35 misses.
Once that timer went off I forgot how to shoot!  I did redeem myself on the last 2 stages and remembered how to properly press the trigger.

Perhaps next time I won't be so nervous and remember how to shoot from the start!

This is why competition is such a great way to train for defensive use should the need arise.  I especially like dueling tree's or other formats that pit one shooter against another for direct elimination.  Event setting up two lines of 5 or 10 clay pigeons is great...First one to break their line wins.

I shoot Steel Challenge matches with a 1911 chambered in 45 ACP, have made it to B class.  Great fun!

It would be a hoot to use the G20 for these matches.  I would be slower due to the heavier/mushier Glock trigger and the greater recoil of 10mm.

A Steel Challenge match is fantastic practice for any shooter.

My wife started shooting steel earlier this year, and she had her first actual match last week, where she placed second, using her almost stock(trigger job) G19 9mm. Second place prize was an AR lower, and some ammo.
I don't do the run-and-gun stuff any more because a car accident left me with severely limited mobility, but I still shoot LR
and ULR rifle matches.
The wife tried shooting a G20, but she didn't like it. She goes through about 500 rounds/week practicing, and even with 9mm, her wrists and hands get sore. I think that much practice with a 10mm would be out of the question for her.

I've been shooting steel challenge with a 10mm for a few months. I realize that the inherent recoil of the 10mm makes it a poor platform for that sport, but I like shooting it. I cary a 10mm, so I don't see any point in shooting a downloaded 9mm in competition. I'm not trying to make the top 5 (or top 10), either.

The last steel challenge I shot I used mostly 220 grain hardcast going about 875 fps. The loads were pretty mellow, and I shot pretty fast. Then I ran out of that load and started shooting 220's going over 1000 fps, and it was much more challenging. It was also a bit more fun.

I think if someone wanted to shoot steel challenge with a 10mm they should just decide how they want to do it: stack the cards...or rock the steel. You can download 10mm to pussycat levels and shoot fast, or you can shoot medium or warm loads and shoot slower, but hammer the ever-living-hell out of the steel.

I think that for the next match I'll split the difference and shoot 220 grain loads that fly between 900 and 1000 fps...too hot to shoot real fast, but not so hot that my hand hurts between sets.

It's not like it matters...the steel doesn't shoot back.
