Title: S&W 1006, 165 gr MT Gold fmj...OCL?
Post by: FN in MT on June 28 2015 03:54:20 PM MDT
What's a good OCL for the Montana Gold 165 gr FMJ flat point bullets in an S&W 1006?

Whats a good powder as well to get an accurate 1200 fps load?  I have AAC #7 and #9. As well as a pound of Blue Dot and a mess of faster pistol/shotgun powders.

Thanks in advance.

The COL for 10mm is 1.2500" but some guns work well out to 1.2600"
I load all of mine to 1.2500"

I like safety margins, so I load them as long as I can and get reliable function.  In my Witness and Glock that is 1.260", but my Para is finicky about ammo over 1.250" in certain nose profiles.

So, I load to 1.250" for SWC and anything else with a sharp agive/long bearing surface.  For most JHP or cast rounds of a WFN style I can run 1.260".

The Wide Flat Nose or large Meplat can be detrimental to the tipping angle with some firearms.  I have seen where DT was loading there shorter at 1.2420" to help feeding issues.  Like sqlbullet mentions some guns will run them at the longer COAL.

The wide flat nose is exactly what I am concerned about...otherwise I'd load to the industry standard 1.250"  and be done with it.

I was hoping someone else had been down this road before and could save me some time.  Currently too damned hot out to fool around shooting some test ammo. WHY I am down in the 65° basement loading ammo :D

Unless you have a really long bearing surface or wicked short ogive, 1.250" should be fine.

FN, I have shot the WFN at the 1.2500" from my 1006 with no issues, other than the Underwood 220 spent casing staying in the chamber during ejection during one test firing.

 Thanks shadow.

I loaded up ten with 14.0 of AAC #9 and they fed/functioned just fine.

Too windy to get the Oehler 35 set up but they seemed to be fairly stout.

All I'm looking for is 1200 fps with some accuracy...these seemed to be there.
