I'm a relative newbie to the 10mm. I've owned a Glock 20 and have a Glock 40 on order. For those of you who shoot the 10mm in 1911 platforms for hunting, do you prefer a 5 or 6 inch barrel and why? I'm considering buying a 1911 in 10mm as well and am kinda torn between the 5 inch barrel for easy carry for hunting and the 6 inch barrel for better sight radius and velocity. I would assume the difference in velocity would be anywhere from 20-50 fps?
This handgun will be used strictly for bear protection while hiking, fishing, camping and for hunting here in Alaska. I'll be handloading Double Tap and Beartooth 200 WFNGCs, (whichever shoots best) so function and reliability are critical. Both worked just fine in my Glock 20 so I'm hopin they'll do the same in the Glock 40 but I have no experience with the 1911s.
Any insight you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Not much of a hunter here but if your glock is reliable why wouldn't you use that then as it has higher capacity and is lighter weight. I have three 1911's and no longer own glocks but in that situation I'd want capacity if you want something other than a glock maybe a witness hunter.
Another plus to the glock is the finish is damn near impervious to the elements rather than having to babysit blueing. Any word on when your glock 40 will be in? I too want one. They unveiled it in January for shotshow but the unheard of g43 just randomly came out and was available in march. Sounds like their stupid idea of making a six inch long slide glock 40 that is actually lighter than a g20 took too much steel off the slide to reliably function the slide.
You might consider the Rock Island Arsenal models. That said go to an after market with tighter chamber and longer barrel in the Model 20 same gain less money. Figure 50 FPS per inch.
10mmfan,
Just curious about 1911s or maybe the Witness hunter. It's a the grass is always greener kinda thing I guess.
Dave84,
The Glock western region rep visited Fairbanks last winter and said they expect to begin shipping the G40 in late June but who knows. On another forum, a guy allegedly called Glock and they told him to expect shipping to begin in late June to early July.
Ramjet,
I'll have to take a look at the RIAs. I sold the G20 to a co-worker and removed my KKM barrel and Zev Tech Fulcrum trigger. I plan on putting both of them in the G40. Assuming they both fit.
Thank guys.
I believe that the longer barrels are aided by the longer sighting plane as well. I have an IAI Javalina with a 7" slide and barrel. I would like to see someone produce a 7" slide/barrel for the Glock 40. In this respect, "longer is better".
Find a Old (Canadian) Para 16-40, ream BBL to 10MM & you will have the 1911 platform with 17 rounds

I endorse this course of action!

If you aren't planning on concealing the pistol, the longer the barrel, the better. Sight plane and velocity will be enhanced with each and every additional inch. I have an 1991 vintage IAI Javalina that extracts a minimum of 45 fps from each additional inch of barrel. Not only does the velocity ncrease, but recoil is reduced with the additional muzzle weight.
Heck, if I had the werwithal, I would have a preeminent match 9 inch slide/barrel manufactured for my Javalina. Why? At 8" of "runway" the 10mm Auto (in the 1911 format) reaches a level of power that's efficient, but not unweildly. After that, it's akin to carrying a "Buntline Special". With 1390 fps or so in a 200-grain bullet, 858 fpe is ample for most game (within reason).
