Title: Tanfoglio 10mm Stock Experts
Post by: agtman on June 26 2015 01:49:25 PM MDT
Okay so, I've been wary of the "standard" 10mm Witness line for some years now and have avoided them, but the LGS got in a 10mm Stock about a week ago. This one's NIB, not used.  I believe it's the Stock I, since it doesn't have a big honking adjustable rear sight. Price is about what Bud's is asking for a Stock I, except I'd save on shipping.

So, my question for the Stock and Match experts is, how have these higher-end 10mms from Tanfoglio been holding up shooting 10mm factory and/or handloads that run from the upper mid-range to full-power?

What, if any, upgrades have you done?

I've read about the immediate Wolf XP recoil spring upgrade, but what poundage spec works best?
Have you swapped out the Tanfoglio sights for something else, like fixed night sights?

I've also got my eye on Sig's DA/SA 10mm model with the fixed night sights. This one:

But the Stock I at the LGS is much less pricey, not to mention that the real downer with the Sig is its 8+1 capacity, whereas the Stock is at least, what?, ... a 14+1?

What are your thoughts on the DA/SA 10mm Sig v. the DA/SA 10mm Stock?

Thanks in advance for you insights.

Have a match and a limited. Any witness match model on up is good. That includes all stock models. Regular witness are iffy. Some good, some not.
No experience on carry models.
Henning guide rod is mandatory upgrade in my book. YMMV

I have the match and the steel full-size and have been running them stock. Considering getting them wolf 20 pound recoil springs. They have been fully reliable stock however.

Stock 1 is great. Regretting I sold mine. It was by far the best Witness I ever had. I needed the money in a pinch and sold it to a friend. Never had one jam, shot everything I put through it. Will buy another as soon as I get this wedding paid for.

I had a Match and it was pounded with a constant diet of nasty stuff. I miss it in a way! I have just a few more Witness pistols and just change the recoil springs. All I have ever done with countless rounds through them including some nasty stuff.

I love them all, but also feel everyone should get the 6" Hunter model as well. One just isn't enough!

The factory spring is a little light. Have a 18#, 20#, & 22# spring set and am currently experimenting back and forth.  The flat bottom firing pin retainer is still not available so I'll experiment again when I get it. Without it 20# seems to be enough, but as reported, still experimenting. I did go with the beefier guide rod and it's well made. I did it for preventative measures so don't know if it is necessary or not, but I feel confident in it.I like the rear sight fine but not enough contrast on the front one for my eyes. Have been trying some bright nail polish on it and it works, but I foresee a fiber optic front on it eventually.

Thanks for all the responses, guys.  8)

Shaneshot: thanks also for the comments on the recoil spring weights.

I've read posts in the past by Match and/or Stock owners who mentioned running the Wolff XP 20, 22, or 24lb springs, so I wasn't sure what worked and what didn't.  I did know that the factory spring was considered way undersprung for anything beyond .40-level loads, but that's also been said for many years about the line of "standard" 10mm Witnesses.

I've heard about Henning's Tanfoglio products, and how some are considered "mandatory" upgrades, like the guide rod.

How about the sights? Any other aftermarket options on the Stock/Match pistols beyond the factory set up? I've read where Tanfoglio's rear sight on the Stock I is sort of cheesy and will loosen over time unless locktited and checked frequently (?) . Can anyone chime in on that issue?

Thanks again for your input.

I'm seeing the fixed rear on the Stock I. Even if it had the Match style adjustable it will hold pretty good until it comes apart (it will). Don't sweat the sight thing, Henning has a better fixed sight to fit it and he is working on an adjustable to replace out the Super Sights. I'm actually running is fixed sight on my Super Match after the Super Sight just wouldn't hold even with Loctite.

Intercooler:

Does Henning's fixed rear sight fit the dovetail on the Stock I? (I mean, is his rear sight intended to replace the Stock I's?) Thanks.

It's really just that I've always felt Tanfoglio's rear sights "looked" weak, ... like maybe hot loads would send them flying off at some point. You'd think Tanfoglio could have machined dovetails on its slides to accommodate Novak-style sights, as that would give end-users a huge range of choices and combos for frt & rear sights.

  It should fit the S1:
