I've been thinking about a G29 for a small lightweight carry gun while hiking with my dogs. The Underwood website says to use their 10mm ammo in guns with a ramped barrel such as Glock. Is there enough chamber support in a stock Glock for Underwood, Double Tap, or Buffalo Bore ammo or is it necessary to get an aftermarket barrel? I also read about people making recoil spring changes. I like the idea of the G29 but I have to ask why would I buy a brand new gun that has to be modified to use it with full power ammo? I would consider something else but I need something small and light weight.
Maybe I don't really need a 10mm. The biggest critter I need to protect myself or my dogs from would be a cougar or wolf. We have both in this area. The chance of an encounter would be very, very rare. Coyotes, skunks, and porcupines are a lot more common.
I use Underwood in my 29&20 with no problems I have recently bought a 9" lone wolf barrel to shoot the 200 grain hardcast for hogs.
I run mine completely stock and have no issues. I think that is the case for most people.
Most of my 1911's have been altered in some way, but I like to tinker.
29 carries extremely well and shoots great. One thing that it is NOT a lightweight gun so to speak due to mass of slide but will serve well beyond expectations as a carry gun.
When hiking the brush with my dogs I carry a 1911 .45acp or a .45colt revolver and on occasion a .357mag. These are all steel guns and the
arthritis in my hips and knees and a sore back make it difficult to pack all steel guns. I was thinking of a Glock 29 or 30 to shave a pound
off the carry weight. I've only shot 10mm a couple of times and it seems like a good hiking round that would take care of almost any situation.
It is lighter than those but when fully loaded it has mass. I guess I am tainted by lightweight when I think of like the 42 lol. It would (29) make a great carry gun for you!
The Glock 29 should run Underwood just fine. I have great success with mine and carry it in jacket weather.
Haybaler,
Have you tried a "Small of the Back" holster? I have the same physical problems that you described. I have found that carrying the gun in the center of my body is a lot easier on me.
Galco makes a great holster, and Taqua makes one for about 40% less.
I shoot Underwood in my 29. Good stuff, and no problems. You might want to train one of your dogs to retrieve brass. It flings it a good distance.
Well worth the investment. No issues with stock components. But the Wolff setup did make an easier gun even easier to shoot. I love mine.
