Title: Need advice about my EAA Witness Compact
Post by: SavageOne on June 01 2015 09:40:58 PM MDT
As I have posted, I have recently purchased a EAA Witness Polymer Compact 10mm. The gun has  been flawless so far, but also is a little brutal. I have seen posted, by many owners, that they install heavier Wolff recoil springs to help soften the recoil. I would like to try this, but have some concerns. As is evidenced by this video, the smaller 3.6" barrelled slides seem to be rather spring sensitive.

I have read several members referring to a +5% and +10% mag spring, that they used in conjunction with the Wolff spring upgrade. I think that might help with the Compact, but do they make them for tha 12 rd. Red follower mags?

Also, if someone could answer a couple of quick questions I'd be grateful.

1. Do full size and larger Witnesses come from the factory with the 14# double spring?

2. Can anyone direct me to where I can purchase a flat bottom firing pin stop? I checked Henning's store and couldn't find them.

3. Will full sized mags work in my compact?

Thanks, in advance, for any help or insight.

1.  Neither of mine had a double spring set up.

2.  You have to call hennings about the flat bottom stop.  I don't think he ever cataloged it online.

3.  Dunno.  I would assume yes as generally magazine compatibility with full size mags is a selling point.

With regard to the mag springs...I would first get and answer to item 3.  If they share magazines, I would order the full size springs and then clip them a bit at a time until they would fit.

Let me know if find a vendor who has heavier recoil springs for the Witness compact 10mm's. I know sprinco makes a recoil reducer for the 10 compacts but they're a little pricey at $79.

The full size mags should seat in fine, but you might have a gap (can you live with it?). The guys running "The Big Stick" 20+ rounders just hang them out. Have you ever seen the extension piece?

If you try a K10 with that spacer, please let us know the results.

I have a compact steel, and I will never trust my life to it.  I've never got it to run near 100% reliability.

The stock double spring setup often has a pregnant pause before feeding the next round.  I tried other weight single spring setups and the heavier you go, the more rounds get jabbed into the bottom of the feed ramp.  I tried k10 mag spring/follower and it behaved the same.  I tried Graham Engineering mag spring/follower without success.  The feel that the magazine is defective in design.  I have to agree.

My best luck is with a single 16 lb spring and low to moderate power loads.  Too bad because I love the way that gun feels.  I wanted, REALLY WANTED to be able to use this gun for carry, but it isn't reliable enough.  Just when you think your getting somewhere, like three mags without a misfeed, the next one will jam three into the feed ramp.

I got a CZ2075 in 9mm and that thing runs like a sewing machine.

I finally got my witness compact to feed properly. My grip hand was exerting enough pressure on the magazine base pad that the magazine was slightly forced down when shooting. This caused the rounds not to feed properly. I loosened my grip slightly, and found that the rounds fed properly every time. Try curling your pinky finger under the magazine. If that fixes the problem, you might be forcing the magazine down when shooting.
Frustration with the gun led me to this. Boy was I surprised when I found out what works for me.
My new problem is that now the replacement slide is showing signs of wear in the recoil spring housing and may be starting to crack again.

My recoil spring solution was I ordered the heaviest spring from wolff for a full size 9mm and trimmed it to fit and cycle.
