I've been looking for loads for 200 grain Hornady XTP JHPs with Power Pistol and Long Shot powders. I did thorough powder company data, loading manual and internet reading research for loads. My goal was 1,150 fps with this bullet. I loaded some test loads this weekend and was able to test them this Memorial Day morning before the rain started. All are within published book loads.
Test pistol: Glock 20SF with 5" KKM barrel and 22lb ISMI recoil spring
Conditions: 75 degrees, overcast, humid, breezy
Chronograph: Shooting Chrony 10-12 feet (no error readings today)
Load Components:
Starline Brass
200 gr Hornady XTP JHPs
CCI 300 LPPs
1.255" OAL, light taper crimp
Note: All loads were hand-weighed on a digital scale. 10 rounds of each load tested.
8.0 grains of Power Pistol:
Avg: 1,156 fps
ES: 36
7.6 grains of Long Shot:
Avg: 1,115 fps
ES: 32
7.8 grains of Long Shot:
Avg: 1,139 fps
ES: 52
Note: One unusually low reading 1,111 fps - error?
8.0 grains of Long Shot:
Avg: 1,154 fps
ES: 39
Note: One lower reading
Analysis: 8.0 grains of Power Pistol or 8.0 grains of Long Shot produce almost the same velocity - 1,150fps. All test ammo fed and ejected flawlessly. No excessive pressure or distress signs on brass. Primers looked normal. No unburned powder. Accuracy was not officially tested but seemed great. Either powder loads would be great for 200 gr XTPs.
I'd appreciate any helpful insights and advice. Anyone have similar results?
10mm-Admirer Thanks for your range reports... 8)
My LGS actually has Longshot in stock and I have a bunch of 200gn XTPs. Guess I'll go buy a lb and see what happens.
Thanks for the review.
That would make some good hunting ammo.
MikeS., I've been really pleased with Long Shot with 180 and 200 grain bullets. I haven't tried it with the 155s yet. Great accuracy. High velocities. Meters well. Grab that pound and have fun!
Ive been using Longshot for 180 XTP's with good results. Looks like I will have to try out abox of 200 grain. Thanks for the info.
