Title: cannelure

Do bullets with a cannelure need to be seated to the cannelure?  What about crimping?

Good question BTW...The bullet with a cannelure may be placed there for use in the 38-40 (revolver/lever action cartridge) assuming you are talking about a 0.400" bullet where a roll crimp is needed to secure the projectile.  Also other various calibers share the same multi purpose bullet sizes.

As used in the 10mm or 40S&W the crimp may not align with the cannelure because of achieving the proper Cartridge Overall Length is what is necessary.  So NO the taper crimp does not necessarily need to be in the cannelure.
