Title: I have an idea.
Post by: Raggedyman on April 08 2015 01:23:52 PM MDT
I've got some old 180 gr .40 S&W EFMJ packed away somewhere. I'll bet that it would take a LOT of velocity to get that bullet to come apart. In thinking I'll pull some and load them over a near max charge of 800-X. What do you think?

They will work like any other 180 fmj bullet...just fine. You wont even double there velocity. Not enough difference, the jackets on most FMJ is quite think.

I expect them to hold up to the extra velocity better and not over expand as much as JHP designed for .40 S&W.

He is referring to Expanding Full Metal Jacket, therefore they should not work just like any other FMJ.

I still feel that they will be fine and NOT over   :)

I have a few boxes of these I use in my 1911 and I also bought a couple boxes of the NEW stuff.. guard DOG ammo.. I like it!

Ummm, why? I have rarely found the most accurate rounds are the ones loaded near the top end. To me accuracy is way more important than velocity.

Of course, I haven't fiddled yet with my Mechtech CCU with the 16" barrel yet, either. I really do need to get a chrony sometime.

Because I want to see what happens.  ;D

One of the things I've been searching for in 10mm since I got one is a load that expands moderately but still penetrates deeply like most 158 gr JHP does in .357 mag. Since most 0.400" JHP is designed for 10mm and the major manufacturers aren't really interested in load development for this niche cartridge, that is something that just doesn't seem to exist. The EFMJ might help because it seems like it would be unlikely to over expand or fragment like the JHPs.

I'm curious what the difference is between the old EFMJ and the new Guard Dog line is. Is it just re-branding or did they actually change something?

I think you meant that most .400" JHP is NOT developed for 10mm, but rather for 40 S&W.

but yeah...I get what you are saying.  After cost of practice ammo, ability to tailor the bullet is the biggest reason I cast.  It would be nice to find that the EFMJ fit this need.

Are the EFMJs like the old Semi-Jacketed Soft Point I used to use in .44 Magnum rounds?  I haven't seen the EFMJs before, but I was out of reloading for about 20 years...

Raggedyman, I saw some of the EFMJ's over at RMR a while back (didn't buy any :-[) and thinking on the same lines as you mentioned, I thought they would be a good high expansion bullet even at 10mm speeds.

I bet they will exceed the 0.75" expansion May get near a 1" spread and may even start to tear apart at the seams!

I for one would be interested in you test results...

Because it's the best powder that I have on hand for medium to heavy 10mm.

800-X would be pretty much the perfect heavy load powder for 10mm if it wasn't made on corn-flake machines. :P

I appreciate the offer but I think the 800-X should work fine.
