gunbroker find. I think the slide stop is wrong. pistol functions fine but pull the slide back by hand and slide stop won't engage. Nice piece, won't win any bullseye matches with it (trigger) but it is a brute.

Are you doing it with an empty magazine inside? The slide stop won't engage without a mag inside unless you manually push up the stop. If you are using a mag maybe your stop is worn down. Used to happen on our berettas in the Navy if the slide stop was used to let the slide go forward to many times.
Man...With that slide stop issue it is basically a paper weight. Better send it to me for proper disposal. :P
So, as Patriot asked, is the magazine in the gun when you performed this test?
If you look in the open action, can you see the protrusion of the slide stop into the action where it would hit the magazine follower? Occasionally you find a guy who files them down so the gun won't lock open on the last round.
Shadow, can you post up a picture of a factory 10XX slide stop? I think you have a few around. ;D
It looks like my 1006.
Looks like every other 1006 I've ever seen... Better send it to me for long-term experimentation and confirmation ;)
Congrats shootz! Nice looking 1006 and they are built like tanks! The trigger takes a little getting used to with the take up.
If there is a drawback it is the lack of parts available since S&W stopped carrying the stock parts.
Mine was my very first 10mm in 1990 and it still serves me well today! I used to be able to hit 4" and in some instances smaller targets @ 130 yards. :o (that was when I was a lot younger and stronger, with eyes like an eagle!) ::)
Shootz. I understand your issue and had the same problem on my 1006. I can see in the picture that the plunger at the end of the slide release is stuck underneath the side plate assembly. This is likely causing the slide to not stay open when a mag is in the gun. This results from too much play on the side plate assembly. Take off your grip and you can see the issue. At the bottom of the side plate assembly there is a fork that pivots on a pin. Likely this fork has spread, and is causing the excess play/excess pivoting. When it pivots high, the plunger slips underneath the assembly and gets stuck. Best thing to do is call S&W and get a replacement part (item #66 - side plate assembly). Part is very inexpensive. A gunsmith can replace it for you, but it's easy to do yourself. Use a punch to chase out the pin for the side plate assembly. Leave the punch in. Then push the pin of the replacement side plate assembly into position, chasing out the punch. Carefully snap the fork onto the pin at the bottom of the side plate assembly. This will fix your issue and you will quickly find the 1006 to be the best handgun you will ever own. Take your time and you'll fix this issue. Enjoy.
It's fixed. It was the side plate.
I was gonna say "your plunger is out" :)
Nice specimen!! Even the same grips. Have fun.
I have two, an adjustable sight early model and a fixed sight later model with the black hammer and trigger. When I start to slip the mortal coil, these will be the last two guns I will own.
