Title: Just getting back into reloading - powder/primer suggestions
Post by: cwall64 on February 12 2015 12:07:15 PM MST
Looking for advice on powder and primers for 10mm.  I am just getting back into reloading, 20 or so years ago I used to reload rifle and 44mag.  I'll be using a single stage RCBS (20 or so years old also!), my dies just came in this week.  In the past I weighed each powder drop (specially on the rifle cartridges), so i'll probably stick with that until I get a load i am comfortable with.  Most likely bullet choice is 180gr FMJ - received 1,000 Starline brass also.  Local husband and wife powder reseller just sent out a newsletter with powders available:

The following is today's shipment/powder inventory.

Please note, they are 1# containers unless otherwise noted.

Power Pistol, 800X  are really good for 10mm/180gr loads.  Note that 800x doesn't meter as well as others.

My goto 10mm powder is Blue Dot which isn't on the list @ 10.4 grains with 180 for a very accurate load

Yon can never have enough of these; BE-86 (NEW), Unique as they seem to work well with many other loads

BTW, Xtreme bullets sell a 180 gr heavy plated bullet for 10mm... great bullet for the price

Power Pistol and BE-86 (slightly faster that Power Pistol and has a flash suppressant) both are good choices.
CFE Pistol has some good qualities in 10mm more so with the lighter bullets.

Silhouette is another powder that measures well and will provide good loadings, I think they to push the loading charges into the area where this power with perform at its best.

800X while it has a big coarse flake making its a hand weighing powder it does provide excellent loads across the bullet spectrum.

I have used Red Dot in the 10mm but it is a faster burning powder and you have to work up from 40S&W loadings.  700X is the same way.

Unique is a good medium load powder across the spectrum...

Blue Dot is always Good to go!

Good luck!

Are Federal 150M good primers to go with?  I was looking at the BE-86 recipe on Alliant's website and they call for 150's, but I assume the 150M's are just a little better quality control...  (The 150M was all the powder supplier had)

They will probably work just fine, if not working at the very edge of upper performance!

So, I got a pound of 800X and Be-86.  Looking at the 800X I am seeing conflicting data between the Hornady 9th edition and the Hodgdon website.  Hdgdon says max load on 180gr for the 800X is 8.7gr @ 1,210 ft/s, whereas the Hornady manual says 10.1gr @ 1,250 ft/s?  big difference, could the website be more up to date based on a change in the powder or are they just 10mm-lite loads?  What would be a good 3rd reference manual?

I've just been looking at an 800x load with 180g XTP heads....

10.1 to me sounds a bit high ;
as the UNDERWOOD factory dump listed on this site runs 9.4 grains of 800x and Underwood is usually near the upper edge of max.
Its box info states 1300fps.

I was actually going to start my 10 round sets at 8.4 grains and work up to 9.4

Members here with more knowledge than I will chime in i have no doubt.

There was a lot of revision to the IMR800X 10mm data early 2012 because it was producing more energy that in the past.
If you look at this data from IMR back in the day you will see where they had higher charge weights using the 135's which caused some issues with pressures in unsupported chambers...

People started seeing over 1800 fps using the 14.5 grain charges and case failures were also noted.

The 180 grain bullets were producing the 1300 fps plus at 9.4 grains...

Another thing to keep in mind is the seating depths and the use of primers as you hit the extreme upper end of the loadings.

I think the 800-X 180 gr load data in the Hornady manual is too high. Bad smiles by 9.6 grains. No other book data has given so much as a slight hint of a smile. On the other hand, I have had zero issues with that old 135 gr. Nosler load (like the one that Shadow posted). 1700 fps in my G20!!  :o I don't go anywhere near there any longer, though, because it just doesn't sound like a load that makes sense.

I just picked up the Lyman Handbook and it says 8.4gr as the max @1073fps and 28,00 CUP.  Interesting!  I guess I'll start around 8.0 gr and work my way up a little...

cwall64, I have shot the 9.4 grain IMR800X under the 200gr XTPs and 200gr Gold Dot (pulled from contract ammo) and they were fine even from my G-20 factory barrel using the 22lb Wolff non captive RSA.

180's are also fine at that loading of 9.4 same setup.

Thanks, nice to know!  I did throw a KKM 10mm barrel in this weekend with a Brass Stacker 22# RSA (G20) and it shot all loads from DT and Underwood to UMC and lighter Georgia Arms very well!  When it was all stock it functioned great, but it did crimp a few cases when ejecting...
