Title: Vintage FBI Ammo
Post by: 4949shooter on January 30 2015 03:15:34 PM MST
Well, I had a chance to fire some vintage 1990's FBI XM100 designation ammo yesterday.

I fired it out of my G20 Gen 4. The ammo was obviously older, tarnished (some of the cases were extremely tarnished). I got  the ammo from a friend who always thinks of me when he talks to his FBI contacts.

Anyway, the ammo was accurate and it all fired without a hitch. The power level was like a .40 s&W. I won't say I was disappointed because, free 10mm ammo is free 10mm ammo!  8)

My buddy told me that when he fired this ammo out of his friend's MP5 10mm, when the rounds hit the steel targets they really swung them around with authority. This got me thinking, that perhaps Federal designed this ammo to be fired in the MP5, and with the longer barrel achieved the true 10mm velocities they were expecting.

Just a thought.

Out of a 8.85" barrel the FBI load would be making about 1100 fps based on the data at ballistics by the inch.  True 10mm 180 grain would be 1400 fps out of a 5" barrel according to the same source (Buffalo Bore 180 gr JHP 5" measured velocity).  When they tested that load in 8" and 9" they were at/over 1500 fps.

I am not knocking the FBI load.  It was what they tested, and it met their stringent and lofty (for the time) requirements.  A 180 gr JHP at 1100 fps is more energy and momentum than a 230 grain 45 ACP or a 185 grain 45 ACP.  I am sure it did knock plates down with authority, especially compared to the 9mm smg's they were probably compared to.

Did you snag one for a pull-down or have we done that one?

We did the 190 grain JHP.

Sorry, I didn't keep one. Next time he gets me a box I can save a round.

I was thinking it was a 10 inch barrel. Even so, as you said the increase is decent.

It was a contract ammo for Kentucky State police...I don't remember what the specs were though.

If you really want to learn more send me a round to do the pull-down documentations, then it will be saved for history sake.
PM me if you wish to have one documented, I'll provide my address and how to mail them.

I was given a 50 round box of Remington 200 gr. FMJ's. It was accurate out of my Glock 20 but felt like I was shootin .40 with the conversion barrel.

I wish I had a round left to send you. It would have been cool to see what the charge/type was.

Yes once the old stuff is shot up no one will know what it was... :o ???

I am communicating with a fellow on S&W forum about sending me some old FBI loads to do a documentation to preserve the history of the ammo of the period.  That is the only way we will get to share the info as we are doing in the pull-down documentations!

Still hoping someone has some SwampFox 135, 155 and 165 loadings that can be documented.  But it may be gone forever!

Anyone who would like to have ammo documented in the pull-downs can contact me via PM here on the forum for instructions and my information!   ;D

According to some folks I have spoken to, the 10mm Master load served the KSP well.
