Title: Compact 10mm
Post by: Reverendpdp on January 19 2015 09:11:10 AM MST
Hello to all.
I am pretty certain that a 10mm is in my future, but I haven't decided which model yet.  I'd like a compact model and haven't ruled out the RIA Ultra MS, the Glock 20, or the Witness P Compact.  The gun will not be my primary CCW, but will be carried in the woods as a backup... so it needs to be light.  Can you give me some opinions?

I am a long way from a Glock fanboi.  But, given your requirements, about the only solid choice is a Glock 29.

Witness compacts are still pretty heavy as steel guns.  Even the polymer Witness has 1/4 lb on the Glock 29.  Add in the fact that you may need to tune it up a bit before it runs 100%.

That said, you list a Glock 20 on your list.  That is a long way from a "compact" gun in my book.  So, I may be confused about your requirements.

Yep, I second a Glock 29 for your needs. I am no Glock fanboy either.

G29sf is my EDC. I use to carry a G20 on the job and off. I didn't think that it was that heavy back then. My 29 is so light that I have to do an arm check to make sure that I didn't forget to put it on. You can drop in an extended barrel and G20 mag and you have it all. I do still carry my 20 at times but it is because it was  with me for so many years, that I just want to take my old friend out for a walk! ;D

Sorry I meant the Glock 29... got confused with the models.

Yup - G29sf fits the bill perfectly. Like this one.

My Glock 29 runs like a Top  :-* , the recoil compared to others is very manageable, the wife loves it.

I will second this.  My Glock 29 shoots about like my Para p16-40/10mm and my Witness full size in 10mm.  Perceived recoil is subjective, but I perceive it about the same.

I would go with the glock if you want a true compact due to the eaa compacts mag. If you are ok with a normal grip but short slide check out the witness P carry.

Glock 29 is the only 100 % reliable option. I love mine and carry it often.

Which +2 is that? I tried the pearce and the Arredondo +5 and they messed with reliability. Is it 100%?

Another vote for the G29! I am far from a Glock fanboy. In fact if Smithy developed a compact 10mm M&P I'd trade in my 29 tomorrow. Then again, I love it. Maybe I wouldn't!

Great gun.

To the best of my knowledge the Glock 29 is about it for a proven small 10mm platform.  I am sort of in a similar boat.  I had a 20 years ago and sold it.  Now that I have a couple 1911s in 10mm thinking of Glock again and maybe trying a 29 since already had a 20.

Me too. Just sitting around waiting for Springfield to come out with an XD in 10mm.

I have a  pair of Glock 29's only because my wife was going to steal mine. They are ugly but mine has been flawlessly reliable.

I haven't had any problems with my Witness compact, but then again I don't shoot the nuclear loads out of it either..

I may be the lone negative voice for the 29 here but--.
My 1st 10mm was a gen 3 Glock 29 and it ran like a champ. However when I was given a S&W 1066 by my son as a Birthday present things changed. Frankly after the 1st time I took both to the range I never really wanted to fire the 29 again.
The old Smith looked better, felt better, was just as reliable, was not much heaver and about the same size but was and is absolutely on another planet as a shooter from the Glock 29. A Glock 20 might be a better comparison as a shooter but the 29 IMO wasn't in the same room!
My advice is to find an old Smith 1066 or 76 and never look back!!
PS I sold the Glock last year as it just sat in the safe but you will have to pry the old Smith from my cold fingers!!

The CZ .45 i have came with the old glossy mag. Sometimes, rounds would nose dive. As of 2013, CZ 97 has a newer mag similar to the K.45 and K10's. What a improvement. Former issue disappeared. Point is, the Compact Witness mags are similar to the old CZ Glossy Mag. Diff cuts, bullet points higer in feed lip and overall plain better feed. I believe if the compact mags were same, it would be a winner.
Some sellers say the new K45's work in the CZ97. I happen to have a K45 new mag and it would not lock up. Also with mere observation there are angle cuts different. Suttle, but there. New CZ mags are pricey. 35 to low 40's a pop. Wadcutter. Not putting nukes in that Compact is a smart move. Most i did was some U/W 180's with a 18lb Wolf Spring.

I have to agree with the Glock 29.

I carry one when I leave the house before daylight to go deer or hog hunting. I switch to the G20 magazine when I get to my hunting land as I like the comfort of the bigger grip and the extra rounds are not bad either.

I would like to have a S&W 10mm but at half or less of the price the G29 is available. I don't even realize I am carrying it and I enjoy shooting it too.

I have carried the flocks 29 as my edc for 2 years. It is versatile, uncannily accurate and easy to shoot. Add a 40 s&w barrel and you have one gun that can do many tasks.

I love my G29!  I just received my order of AR500 targets from www.shootingtargets7.com, 5 x 12" and a few other smaller sizes, set them up at 25 yards, and blasted away for hours!  Much more fun than shooting paper...  Only thing is I think I need a bigger tarp to catch my brass!

I do have feeding issues if I top off the magazines with a full 12 rounds. I'll have a round nosedive just like you said, but I've never had a jam when  I only load 9 or 10 rounds in a magazine.. The biggest problem is it's undersprung even with wimpy ppu ammo I can feel the slide batter the frame which is a little disconcerting. Maybe one day someone will make heavier recoil springs for the compact. Until then I'm going to purchase a standard length slide in 10mm. It only adds 3/4" overall length.

I really like my Gen 4 G29 for the purposes you described.  Mine is reliable and accurate.  It is a good size to carry.  It makes me smile to shoot the powerful little beast.  Mine came with an exceptional trigger for a Glock with a surprise crisp break.

Two of my mags have the Pearce extensions for range and home defense use and two are stock for concealed carry.
