Hi guys... excellent forum! My first post here. Have been on many of the other gun forums for quite a few years.
Have coming in a new Glock 20 SF package I'm buying from a good upstanding member in another forum. Comes with three new Lone Wolf Barrels: 10mm, 40S&W and 357 Sig, Six mags and assorted other ammo and accessories.
This is specifically for back country protection here in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. When up north I also carry bear spray.
My usual carry is CCO 1911 .45ACP or Glock 19.
I've read a TON of threads on virtually every forum regarding 10mm. I'm wanting to carry Hard Cast in back country with one spare mag of JHP.
Currently in Colorado I carry G19 with Buffalo Bore 124 +P+ Penetrator H.C. after having close encounter with mountain lion. Black bears more prevalent in Colorado.
Been on the high peaks for forty years, I'm really out in the boonies either solo or with another.
The package is coming with S.S. guide rod with 22# recoil spring in addition to factory barrel and spring.
I will probably carry in the spare mag Underwood 165gr Gold Dot JHP's.
What would you recommend for total reliability in a Hard Cast with the Lone Wolf 10mm barrel coupled with 22# spring?
Underwood 200gr FMJ, Underwood 220 H.C., or Buffalo Bore 220?
I will buy boxes of ammo to test reliability.
Just checking in to get a more refined and experienced recommendation.
Appreciate.
Welcome to the forum.
I carry in the wasatch mountains here in Utah. Mostly the same cirtters. I cast my own 205 grain WFN and load them under a healthy charge of Blue dot, AA#9 or Longshot. Once when out shooting water jugs with a friend, I sent this load through 11 jugs of water.
Buffalo Bore and Underwood both load very respectable heavy hardcast in 10mm as well. Test thoroughly in your guns before you trust your life with it!
And, of course, post up your results after testing.
You have some choices there depending on what will cycle 100%.
BUFFALO BORE 21C 220 .290" Meplat going 1,181 FPS Being very pricey!
UNDERWOOD #242 220 .275" Meplat going 1,193 FPS Using the same bullet as BB and a little better velocity.
GRANITE 200 .321" Meplat going 1,108 FPS Using maybe the best bullet of all. Available?
DOUBLETAP 200 .322" Meplat going 1,191 FPS Using probably a better bullet than the 220's.
DOUBLETAP 230 .320" Meplat going 1,094 FPS The pull-downs showed a bullet weight <230 by a good bit.
climb14er, welcome to the forum! Congrats with your G-20SF procurement with the extra barrels.
I run mine with a Wolff Gun Springs non captive recoil rod and 22 lb spring set.
Intercooler has shown a lot of the heavy cast options that could serve your needs.
Best regards! :D
Thanks for the replies.
The Glock 20SF came today and the accessories on Monday. The pistol was NIB and I cleaned the copper grease and lubed 'er up a little. Came with a 22# Wolff non captive spring with Wolff guide rod along with factory captive spring.
The ammo that came in the package was one fifty box Underwood 165gr JHP, one fifty box Underwood 155gr JHP, a box of Hornady XTP either 165 or 180... can't remember, two twenty round boxes of Double Tap 200gr Hard Cast and a box of fifty Blazer .40S&W FMJ.
I placed an order for two fifty round boxes of Underwood 200gr FMJ.
I noticed that in the Lone Wolf 10mm barrel, the Double Tap... about one box, assorted went in a little on the snug side. Not jammed in, but not as free flowing as the Underwood.
Do you think I might have a problem feeding or extracting these in the Lone Wolf barrel? I would think the Glock 10mm OEM barrel should feed these fine. Again, they're not jammed in the Lone Wolf. Just a bit... snug.
Will head to the range next week after the FMJ's arrive. This way I could test out both 10mm barrels with the 22# spring with the assorted ammo.
I'm going to keep the .40S&W Lone Wolf conversion barrel that came with the package. I have for sale the 357Sig listed either on GT or AR15.com I'll sell it delivered USPS Priority for $89.95 if anyone is interested.
I'm on my way folks with the 10mm! :)
I had issues with my stormlake barrel being too snug on Underwood rounds. Caused misfeeds. Just test out both barrels and I hope you see no issues.
