Title: Delta Elite For Custom Build
Post by: Raleigh on January 01 2015 10:47:05 PM MST
Last week I snatched up this Delta Elite 10mm for a very fair price.
I bought it with the intention of sending it off for a custom build this year and have started discussions with several smiths, plan to send it off in February.

Front Strap Checkering

Flat Checkered MSH

Ed Brown Magwell

Beavertail GS
.40 Supported Barrel and S10mm Supported barrel fitted
Flush cut and Crown Barrels
Trigger Replacement
4# Action job with new components
Extended Ambi Thumb Safety
Gold Bead Front Sight
Undercut Trigger Guard
Serrated Slide Top
Delta inlay in new grip panels
Sniper Grey Cerekote Slide
De-honed Stainless frame
Polished stainless controls

I am certain that there will be modifications to this list before it is done.
This is my first custom and I am super excited!

Very Nice host gun for a project  :D  Here's my 'OL Delta, built by a former head gunsmith at STI. A consistent 100% X gun. Melonite finish.

After doing some research I have decided to drop the .40 barrel and pick up reloading again.
I haven't reloaded for a few years so I will have to read up and get a new reload bench set up.
The cost of a barrel pays for most of the bench set up, and I will have about a year to build up a stock pile of 10mm  :D

That looks like a fine piece to me, definitely not a hack job, if he has a build sheet from Bar-Sto I would pay that for it, especially with the .40 barrel and mags.

Very nice! Love seeing well-done custom DEs.

Mine, done years ago by master pistolsmith Vic Tibbets:

Nice piece, I have seen that one before, really like the rug you have for it.

Shot it today and I must say I am in love!
There were 2 instances of the trigger not reseting after firing early on, but I fired 50+ trouble free rounds after that, 100 rounds in all.
Brought it home and detail stripped it, saw no issues other than the internals were a bit dry.  Cleaned it and greased it up and cycled by hand 100 times with perfect reset every time.

All in all not a bad trip, I love the way gun handles, the gold dot sight is awesome.
I will provide an update after the next trip, I expect that little bug will not show up again.

I was not aware that barsto would build the complete gun.  When I talked to them in 1990 they did not.

They referred me to where the LAPD swat team had all of there guns done.

Bill Capone owned kings gun works in Glendale, ca.

I probably have the only 10mm he did as he saw no need for that much power then.

Told him I wanted a hunting capable gun.

Have not looked much at this kind of sites since.

Interesting the technical and style changes that have occurred.

I may have to post pictures of my old delta elite gold cup if anyone likes older builds....

I like some of the mods allowing a higher grip position.  Good idea.

I ended up with a 22 or 23 pound wolf square wire spring to stop the too light of slide from hammering the gun even with protectors inside.

I found I liked the arched smith and Alexander mainspring housing for snap shooting more than the straight ones I see most use.

Colt's DE is okay, but I see no need to use an expensive "base" for building a "better" pistol. What's the attraction. the "rampant pony"?

I can't see the value in it.

For my use, I would buy an in spec receiver and build from there.

But, the value is in resale.  Lots of guys that don't really know there guns will pay more for a custom prancing pony than a custom that says Caspian on the side, despite the fact that the Caspian is probably going to be the better gun.

So for me, build to own, pick up a caspian or fusion frame and slide.  Build to sell, find a prancing pony.
