Finally got some help to cast some bullets. It hasn't been enough time since my back surgery to do any heavy lifting. I have a 10 quart cast iron pot and a burner from a turkey deep fryer that I cast from. Found that a lot easier than trying to use a small pot. I am using almost pure lead,100lbs of pure and about 25lbs of wheel weights. I use dry spray Moly using a hair dryer to dry the Moly, size and coat with Lee Alox. They look just like the old NYCLAD bullets. I loaded 50rds of 9mm using 5.9 grs of Unique. I have a pound I am trying to get raid of. Speer #11 puts a 125gr 9mm bullet at 1197fps with 5.9grs of Unique. After 50rds through my M&P full size 9mm I had a tiny amount of leading. I used CLP on a patch and then ran a brush through the barrel 4 times and ran a couple more patches of CLP followed by a couple of dry patches and the very little bit of leading was gone.
I am going to back off on the powder charge to around 5.5grs. All I am trying to do is find the cheapest and best way to cast bullets for practice. My first thoughts was the soft lead would plow through the rifling making leading bad and pour accuracy but I was wrong. Accuracy was good and leading was no problems. Just wondering if anyone had ever tried this? If so let me know what your results were. I am not going to push these over 1200fps. Next will be running some through my Witness 10mm at 1200fps to see how they do. The 10mm cast are 145gr.
If I only cast 9mm out of the 125 lbs of lead I have I can get around 7,000 bullets. Now I have got to figure out how much per bullet this will be.
