Title: Smith 1006
Post by: EdMc on August 07 2012 11:25:59 AM MDT
I'd been thinking about a Kimber but then this turned up. Now I have to decide whether to shoot it or it becomes a safe queen..........didn't take long, it'll be a shooter. ;D If anyone is interested the seller will probably post a couple more at some point.

So you bought that one? I always follow the auctions but think they cost more than they should versus new 10's.

Not much new chatter out there so the pool may be locked.

Yeah, they are high but most of the crappy ones I've watched went for well over 600. Although fixed sights it was NIB with two mags and the seller didn't overcharge for shipping or add on for credit cards. Should have it tomorrow.

EdMc, congratulations!  You will be a happy camper with that fine specimen... ;D

Very nice and Congrats!

$700. Anything right there and I would pop for one but I'm holding hope something new will hit the market. The new line of Tanfoglios that may be open now might fit the bill!

Congrats!  Hope it's does everything you ask it too, and maybe you'll have a Kimber at some point too.

Shadow:

Since you're the resident S&W 10XX expert,  ;D  any problems with the yellow followers in the mags? Seems like  I read they changed to a white follower at some point. This one is a TFB prefix if that means anything.

The white followers did replace the yellow. I have approx 40 magazines and have not had any trouble with either color.

Thanks. 40 mags? Think that's enough? Just kidding.....if you want to sell a couple let me know.

I have 50 mags for my CETME.  Allows me to keep 1000 rounds kitted up.

Got them during a cheaper than dirt blow-out for .97 each.

No problems from any of the S&W magazines with either yellow or white followers, using 10mm, 40S&W, 9x25Dillon  waiting on my other barrels to be finished to test 357Sig also...

Thanks Shadow.

Btw: Field stripped the Smith and put some oil on it yesterday. Went to the range today and fired 50 rds of the Atlanta Arms ammo they sell.......no problems with either mag nor with the pistol. Pull trigger, bang....repeat. I was quite pleased with the 1006. :D

Glad all went well on its first trip out, I love it when a plan comes together.

Thanks, so do I. ;D  Plan to run some more light loads through it before trying some warmer hand loads. I'll be interested in the difference between the Smith and G20SF.....not so much the small difference in barrel length but the tighter chamber in the Smith.

You should see a measureable difference on any loadings...Largest I saw in S&W with SwampFox 1240fps ammo is 0.4295" and the Glock 29 was 0.430".
Others have seen 0.434" for their guns from what I have read.

Shadow

Think there is any chance of finding the palm swell grips once made for these pistols? I looked at Numrich and several of the usual suspects with no luck. I'd like to try them on the Smith.

Last I heard they were all gone at S&W's site, Someone post over at S&WForum about getting one and someone actually parted with a derlin palm swell for them...luck is all I can say.  You might do a search on Gun Broker see if any are avalible, save that search and have it e-mail you if some come up for bid/sale.  ???

Now the Houge rubber is a palm swell configuration in rubber, and will soak up recoil even better.  I have the Houge rubber on my 1086's and they are a pleasure to shoot.   The Houge wooden also share the same shape/contures and I have a set of those and they are pretty too.  ;D

Thanks, I may try the Hogue if I can't find any. Not for recoil but the stock grips feel so thin in my hand. Maybe I've been shooting the Glock too often.  ;)

You're welcome.   :D  The Houge Rubber will add to the width and feel more like the Glock and that will spread the recoil forces.

Will the palm swell grips for a 1076 fit the 1006 model?
Title: Re: Smith 1006
Post by: The_Shadow on August 20 2012 10:27:20 AM MDT
It will fit but if it is for the 1076 the gap for the decocker lever will be the only difference!

Post by: EdMc on August 20 2012 10:37:09 AM MDT
Thanks for the quick reply.........so the grips would have to me cut/modified to clear the decocker?

Do these look like Palm Swell grips to you, or just the normal size? I'm not familiar enough to tell.

The LGS has a Hogue in stock for $18. I think I am going to pick it up tomorrow because I know I'm not going to like the stock grip.

I may try the Hogue myself, it's less money than other options but the more I shoot the pistol, the more I don't notice. ;D
Sent an email to a guy in N GA that deals in old Smiths about palm swell grips for a 1006 and a set of diamond Ks for a Model 19. He didn't have any for the 1006 but did have one set of diamond Ks for 265.00.......wooohaaaa....ouch. That's over half what I paid for the pistol.

Funny, they had three sets for sale last night, but none now as you said. I thought I'd try them but you'll probably like the Hoage better. :D

You need all the magazines when you have 16 S&W 10mm.  :)
