Title: Need help from some extremely experienced reloaders regards to powder
Post by: TODDXUSMC on September 11 2014 11:21:08 AM MDT
A good day to all! As we all know Powder has been hard to find. I do have a half a pound of AA9, half pound blue dot, three quarters pound of longshot, and a few .oz of 800 X. Right now I have 700 rounds of brass and intend to order 500 more rounds of brass. This obviously leaves me with a bit of good powder but a lot of time and component use working up loads. The good news is I have 6 lbs Alcan5, 3 lbs of Alcan7, and 3 lbs Alcan8. Al5 is slightly faster than hs6. Al7 is extrely close to blue dot. Al8 is slower than blue dot but faster than 2400. I have nosler 150 and 200gr. And some 180GD.  How do I find a safe starting point using the Al7 & Al8 (150 gr w Al7), and the 200gr with the Alcan 8. Is there an equation to use? Will the Powley pressure equation work with the 10 mm? I have load from a disc, but these powders pre-date the program. I got the approx burn rates from the 44 & 357 mag sections in the Speer #9 manual. I know how to properly develop a load from a published starting point, I just don't know where to start. I'm thinking this Alcan 8 with heavier bullets may be the ticket.  This should get me through the powder crunch. Any ideas? Maybe some old time hand written equations that will work?
Thank you all. Kind regards,, Todd

First thought...Find a friend with a copy of quickload.  Not sure if it supports those powders though.

Second thought was write to Brian Pearce of Handloader magazine and see what he has to say.

Third thought was to cross correlate load data and google search.  I did a little of this, but didn't land on anything I would be really comfortable recommending.  Couple things I might try, but would not suggest someone else try on my say so.

Fourth, and probably best.  Find someone that has a 38/357 and a bunch of longshot, blue dot or AA#9 and trade them for your alcan powder.  They get a powder that is at this point a bit of a novelty, but for which there is load data.  And you get powder you can load with confidence in 10mm.

Best bets are numbers 2 and 4.  If you do execute on #2 and they have data to try, please let us know the results.
