Title: 10mm 1911 from the ground up
Post by: Bro KV on August 01 2012 10:49:37 PM MDT
Can I buy all the components to build my own 10mm "CCW" sized 1911, ie the frame?  I know I can get the slide and barrel and whatnot but the frame is my main question.

Midway lists Caspian, STI, and Les Baer. Shotgun News usually has some ads that have RIAs (Rock Island....Philippines) if you want something cheaper.

Yes, you can.

This is where I started with my P12 conversion.

My research shows that buying the frame/slide from Fusion is probably the most economical to get a good forged frame and barstock slide.  They were cheaper than Caspian for comparable options.

http://www.fusionfirearms.com/servlet/the-408/1911-Officers-Frame-Checkered/Detail - $295.00
http://www.fusionfirearms.com/servlet/the-274/Slide-10mm--fdsh--40/Detail - $249.00

I landed on Schuemann for the barrel.  They were competitive on price and were the only one I found that cataloged a commander length, Clark/Para ramped barrel in .400 bore.  Bar-sto, Kart, etc you would have to get a longer barrel and have it chopped and recrowned, or special order.  It is short chambered so you will have to have the barrel finish reamed to 10mm.

http://www.schuemann.com/store/detail/tabid/63/p-301-cc40cnm0.aspx - $195.00

You may want to talk to Fusion and see if you can talk them into a kit price on a 10mm CCO. They don't list one, but a Gov't 10mm kit that includes frame, slide, barrel, bushing, slide stop, recoil plug, recoil spring and guide rod, all fitted lists for $697.  That is $42 cheaper than frame/slide/barrel above.  And all the fitting is done for the major "critical" components.  Add a Cylinder & Slide pre-fit sear/hammer and all the critical fitting is done.

Everything else I pretty much stuck to Brownells catalog when I was pricing, using mainly Cylinder and Slide, Ed Brown and EGW parts.

Fusion built my 10mm CCO so they have all the parts. When I ordered the base started at $1295.00, fit and assembled. The full build kit I believe was around 1000, give or take a little.
