The first day at the range had only a couple objectives. I had a series of step up loads from 88g to 95g of Reloder17 behind a 350g Speer slug. I wanted to get it hitting close to where it should at 100 yards and to make it through the step up and verify that 95g wasn't too hot. I kinda succeeded. It handled 95g just fine, and was throwing the step-up loads in a 2" group at 100 yds after a few at 50 yards to get it close to center.
I can say I shot the pistol with one hand, using the second hand to squeeze the sand bag under grip for elevation control. Recoil was no big deal, but OMG the blast from the thing was impressive!!!
After throwing a decent group, I settled into trying to do a really good group with a series of five of the 95g loads. I hit the 8.5x11 target page three times out of five. The tripod shook itself loose, the rings were shot loose where they attached to the base, and I was seriously glad the chronny didn't make the trip. A slug like that would have done impressive damage to the main unit!!!
I fired 13 rounds with no problem with wear and tear on the shooter. Barrel warms up quick and I decided five in a string was plenty before allowing some cooling time.
According to Quickload, 95g of Re17 pushes the 350g Speer at 2300 fps and a hair over 4000 ft-lbs.
Oh Boy!!!
Greg
Sounds like you had a great time with that thing! Shaking things loose has shown you some challenges to keeping it on target with bipod, rings and even scope elements possible under recoil! Good luck securing things... ;)
Meh, it's only a .416 Rigby ;D
Just kidding! Nice rig btw!

Shot the thing over the Chrony. Official average was 2358 fps and 4358 ft-lbs.
The pic of the breech in the original post show a scope ring about ready to let go where it attaches to the base. The profile pic shows its canting. That setup just wasn't up to the task.
I started off with a pair of Warne Maxima rings, but the scope still moved 2mm in five shots. I ordered a second pair and it now wears a pair on the objective end and a single ring toward the breech end because there was not enough tube to fit two. So far, so good with 10 rounds sent down range.
It did bite me by breaking a nail on the finger next to the trigger finger. I was lightly holding the big rig, trying to do a tight 100 yd group. Results were the finger and a 1.25" group.
Shooting this thing isn't a typical trip to the range... Its an event!!!!
Greg
I love the Contender/Encore series of guns, but, there is a certain line I think where I would feel much better with it being a Bolt Gun like a Rem XP100/Sav Stryker...I know, breaks are supposed to be stronger, but I can honestly say I have been at the range when an Contender split its frame.
That is still a very nice rig, and 1.25" at 100 yards is definitely minute of any critter worth eating!

No way will an Encore action be as strong as a decent bolt action. Falling block (like a Ruger #1) is stronger, but not the Encore. The Contender is MUCH less robust than the Encore, but is a better firearm to carry weight wise.
The 416 Rigby is about as far as the action is capable of handling. Its a lower pressure round which allows for the larger bolt face. The short mags are a no-no in the Encore because of the thrust against the breech face due to the higher pressure and because the barrel is limited to 1" diameter.
I need to send an XP in for a custom 6.5x47L project. I have the pieces, I just need to get it packed and wait for the smith to get it done.
