Title: New to the forum and new to 10mm with a Smith and Wesson 1086
Post by: yellowlt4 on August 30 2014 08:51:43 AM MDT
I finally picked up a 10mm.  I was debating between the Glock 20 and the EAA Match when I came across this Smith and Wesson 1086 yesterday at the LGS.  A police trade in and she needs some TLC on the outside but looks like very low round count on the inside.

I'm on the hunt for new grips and sights if they are out there.  Hopefully I'll get some range time this weekend.

Congrats! The 1086 is a sweet DOA gun, You may want to consider new recoil spring if you shoot the high impulse ammo.  I use the Wolff Gun Springs 21 lb recoil spring in mine.  About the cosmetic stuff, don't worry about that too much, it doesn't appear that you have much.

Good luck, enjoy!   :D

Welcome to the Forum and the World of 10mm
Looks like you've found yourself a nice little S&W there
Enjoy them both

Thanks guys, its a little rougher than it looks in the pictures.  I think I got a deal at $385 out the door.  One down side is it came with only one magazine.  The LGS also has a rough looking 1066 I'm going back to take another look at next week.

You can use some baking soda, placed on a shop towel, dampen it, rub it hard into the spots to clean up the stainless steel.  I hate the use of scotch brite pads, it leaves shinny spots.  I would use baking soda blasting to bring back the original look...but that requires detail strip down, blocking off areas to avoid the soda getting inside and good cleaning afterwards.

Will a proper/professional bead blasting get it back to factory looking?  Will bead blasting hurt it at all from a collectors standpoint?  I doubt this will be anything other than a shooter but I like my guns looking good as well.

I wouldn't do a bead blast even though that was the original finish.  Using baking soda would be to just even things out a little, if there is some holster wear.
If you want it restored, S&W would do that for a price.  Is it worth doing?  Maybe, maybe not...Enjoy the pistol, but the 1086 - 1,660 units produced 1990-92.

You are one lucky rascal!!

Wish I could find a 10xx series around here...finding 3rd Gen 45's & 40's are easy ;)

The slide looks a bit shinier than the frame. If I snag the 1066 I may have smith restore one of them for me. I wonder what that would set me back.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Awesome S&W. A friend of mine who is a dealer bought one to flip and it looks like he is going to hang onto it.

I just picked up a 1006, paid way too much, has nice kingswood grips on it.  It will join my Delta and will be fed a lot of 10mm reloads.  Happy shooting.

Can one find out the model differences between a 1086, a 1066, and a 1006?  Maybe it is online somewhere??
