Title: 41 Mag +P
Post by: K10 on August 18 2014 07:54:01 AM MDT
I was hoping since this is a 10MM forum, that they would be some 41 mag fans. I know that I like them. Since it seems that when loading the 10MM with AA#9, you can put almost all the powder in the cast that it will hold and still get the bullet to stay put. Could you kinda do this in a strong single action? I was thinking a 210XTP at 1500. I know it does not have to go that fast to kill deer or black bear, but you know how we sometimes load the 10.

I never had a 41Mag of my own, I went the 44Mag route.  :-[  Never really understood why Hercules/Alliant advised against using my favorite Blue Dot in those cartridges? ???  Many people used Blue Dot in their 41Mags safely.  It worked well in the ones I tested, in other peoples 41Mag guns and worked really well from my 357Mag (even with the 125's they advised against) and 44Mag, which led me to using it almost exclusively in 10mm in 1990 with great accuracy and performance.

While Blue Dot didn't yield the highest velocities it was up there and clean burning, but was deadly accurate. :D

K10, after I thought about your request I decided to investigate my data for AA#9 in the 41 Remington Magnum.
Accurate Arms actually shows this loading in their handloading PDF edition 3.1 (if you want a copy of this PDF PM me.

Edition 3.1
41mag using No.9 210 HDY XTP 16.2grains @ 1,338 fps
41mag using No.9 210 HDY XTP 18.0grains @ 1,521 fps 40,000 psi 1.570"

Edition 5.0 shows reduced charges
210 HDY XTP 15.2 grains @ 1,271 fps
210 HDY XTP 16.9 grains @ 1,445 fps 35,200 psi 1.570"

AA#9 has undergone some changes since then, it used to be a very fine microbead powder but newer batches have been shown as a flatten ball powder...

I plugged in the data to Quickloads, and the maximum amount of #9 powder you can use in the case is 19.0 grains.

This is with a Hornady XTP 210gr bullets @ 1.590 COAL.

Powder volume is 78%

If you fill the case with #9, you will blow up your gun. It will be over 2x max SAAMI pressure for the 41 Mag cartridge.

Can't help ya with the load data, but I too am a 41 fan!

657 Classic Hunter worked over by Gemini Customs.

Just got it last year and am starting to figure out what loads work well.  Long distance target shooting only.

I love the 41Mag, but it sounds a bit foolish to talk about filling the case up.  Look at the load manuals and see what the max charge is.  Forget if you have case capacity left over.  Start low, work up, watch the chrono and pressure signs.  If you're getting higher than expected velocity you are likely getting higher than safe pressure.

I prefer 2400 in the 41Mag.  No particular reason other than it works well and is easy to find.

How long is your barrel?   Barrel length is the most important factor when trying to achieve high velocity especially with a revolver.  Anything less than a 6" barrel is going to make it difficult to get  1500fps with the 210 xtp's. Even with a long tube you might have to go over the current max book loads to get there. You might want to consider H110, be careful and good luck.

Recently picked up a Blackhawk in .41 Magnum for when I need more power than my .40 S&W.  I've got reloading stuff on the way but in the meantime I did chronograph Remington 210gr JSP and they averaged right around 1,400 fps from the 6.5" BBL.  As strong as the Blackhawk is it wouldn't surprise me if I could get another 200 fps out of warm handload (with the right powder of course), the next trick is actually finding some 210gr XTPs!

I picked up a few of the XTPs on Gunbroker a few weeks back.  Just keep your eyes open.  They show up from time to time.

Ordered a few boxes of them a few weeks back off Midway, all is good now!
