Title: Longshot for 180 gr hardcast?
Post by: batex on August 11 2014 06:06:13 PM MDT
Hi all,
I'm new here and am looking to develop a load for my new Glock 20 Gen 4.   I've recently replaced the factory barrel with a KKM barrel cut to 5.4".  I've read that Longshot is a good choice for medium to full power loads with 180 jacketed bullets.   I don't know, however, if I can use Longshot with 180gr. hardcast (truncated cone flat point).   The bullets have a brinell hardness of 18 according to the manufacturer (Rocky Mountain Reloading).  I'd appreciate any advice.  If not Longshot, what would be good powder for 180gr. hardcast?

Thank you!

Batex, welcome to the forum and congratulations with your G-20 gen4. 8)  The cast bullets can work with the factory barrel and the KKM but they need to be in the 0.4015" or 0.4020" for best performance without leading up the barrel especially when pushing them to the extreme.  Fit is very important, my cast run 0.4015" and I'm using Carnauba Red lube with good results.

Many guys are using the powdered poly paints baked on, instead of lube and the coatings protect the bore from lead deposits.

You will want to expand the case mouth enough to allow the bullet to seat fully without shaving any of the bullet material off by the casing.  The best way is seating the bullets fully without any crimp being applied and in a separate step apply the final crimp process.

Now that being said the LongShot will work but you may want to work in the 1150 to 1200 fps range if leading isn't being a problem.  I mostly use Blue Dot 10.2 to 10.4 grains as a target load with the 175 -180 grain cast bullets.

Good luck and let us know how you make out!  :D

I have a similar setup on my 20SF.  I am shooting the KKM barrel in full 6" length.
I shoot a 190 grain hardcast bullet with a gascheck dropped from a custom Accurate Mold.  The bullet is sized to .401" and pushed along by a healthy dose of Longshot powder for a velocity of 1335 fps.  I have never had any issues with leading.  I would suggest starting with 8 grains of Longshot and carefully working your way up looking for any signs of pressure.

Who sells 0.400 gas checks?

Hornady and Lyman don't sell it.

All the gas checks I use are Gator Checks from West Monroe, LA.

I'm using 9.3gr longshot and 180gr cast (brinell 22) OAL of 1.260 getting right about 1250 out of glock 20 with storm lake barrel.
