Title: Magtech Bullets 10mm 180 Grain Full Metal Jacket - load data wanted
Post by: my_old_glock on August 05 2014 05:23:24 PM MDT

Midway USA has Magtech Bullets 180 Grain FMJ bullets on close-out for $14/100, so I bought some

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/986504/magtech-bullets-40-s-and-w-10mm-auto-400-diameter-180-grain-full-metal-jacket-bag-of-100

The FMJ should be better than plated in a 10mm.

I purchased these because I can't find real 10mm ammo at a good price, and want to load my own. I am not looking for Underwood performance, but I would like to shoot something that feels the way a 10mm should feel.

What is a good load for these (or similar weight/type) bullets?

I think I have the following pistol powders.
Solo1000
AA#2
AA#5
AA#9
Red Dot
Green Dot
Bullseye
Unique
American Select
e3
Herco
TiteWad
TiteGroup
HP-38
Win 231
Longshot
H110
CFE pistol
AutoComp
VV110

I don't have BlueDot or HS-6

I have QuickLoad and loading books from Accurate, Alliant, and I know about the Hodgdon reloading website. I don't want to have to go through every powder to find a nice 10mm load, so any experience with that weight bullet and those powders would be appreciated: Which powders shot good, and which did not.

I have a Glock 20 with stock length barrel.

I have new Starline Nickle brass.

Thank you.

my_old_glock, may I ask how fast you want them to go? ???

LongShot will drive them fastest...
Recent test I did with the CFE showed great results at the Hodgdon's printed data..
If you're just looking for some target blast'in the book loads of HP-38, W231, AA#5, Unique, Herco, Red Dot and Bullseye would all provide target worthy results without using all of your powder up.

If PM me an e-mail I have some Alliant data from 2006 which has been good for most all of their pistol powders.

Best regards! ;)

I just want something that matches the original FBI loads, so I can see/feel what a 10mm is suppose to feel like. I already have a 40, so I don't need watered-down 10mm. I do not know if the loads listed on Hodgdon website are equal to the FBI loads. That is why I asked for some data. I didn't want to waste powder and bullets to find the right load. I can not find any info online about older 10mm ammo specs.

Underwood list a velocity of 1300 fps for their 180 grain solid, so I would like something slower than that. I figure that Underwood is more powerful than the original FBI loads.

Remington lists their 10mm UMC w/180gr @ 1150 fps. Is that an FBI load?

Most of the FBI loads were 180's about 980 fps and equal to what w know as 40 short and weak.

1150 fps  would be a great comfortable loading for the 180's...
You show AutoComp in you list...
180 gr with 7.5 grains AC would be very close to 1150 fps

You also show CFE in you list...
180 gr with 7.3 grains CFE would be very close to 1150 fps

Other powders you list...
The max loads listed fro 231 and HP38 @ 5.8 grains would be about 1061 fps

Using Herco 7.5 grains @ 1,140 fps 35,800 psi
Using Unique 7.0 grains @ 1,125 fps 35,700 psi
Using Bullseye 6.4 grains @ 1,125 fps 35,900 psi
