Title: 5" Full lug S&W 629 44
Post by: mt10mm on June 13 2014 11:44:53 AM MDT
Just picked one up and was wanting to shoot some 305 hard cast UW for this. I have seen articles that state the smith would not handle heavy loads. Can someone help me out ? Will the smith handle them ?

MT10mm, Intercooler sent me a Buffalo Bore 44Mag for pull down and the BB loading did have a specific warning not to use in the S&W pistols.  They were developed for the heavier revolvers...
Buffalo Bore Info and Warning!
Heavy .44 Magnum +P+ Ammo - 340 gr. L.F.N. - G.C. (1,478 fps/M.E. 1,649 ft. lbs.) - 20 Round Box
NEW HEAVY 44 MAGNUM +P+
This new load is designed ONLY for certain firearms. They are as follows; Ruger Red Hawk, Ruger Super Red Hawk, Ruger Super Blackhawk or Vaquero, Freedom Arms Model 83, Taurus Raging Bull, Colt Anaconda and Dan Wesson Revolvers. Suitable rifles include T/C Encore, "modified" Marlin 1894 (see next paragraph), Winchester 1894, any rifle with a falling block action and the Handi Rifle. We get hundreds of emails asking if this load can be fired in S&W revolvers or some firearm other than what is in the above list. The answer is NO.

Underwood's 44 Remington Magnum +P+ 340 Grain Lead Flat Nose Gas Check has this warning as well.
Muzzle Velocity: 1425 fps
Muzzle Energy: 1533 ft. lbs
ATTENTION:This new load is designed ONLY for certain firearms. They are as follows; Ruger Red Hawk, Ruger Super Red Hawk, Ruger Super Blackhawk or Vaquero, Freedom Arms Model 83, Taurus Raging Bull, Colt Anaconda and Dan Wesson Revolvers. Suitable rifles include T/C Encore, Marlin 1894, Winchester 1894, any rifle with a falling block action and the Handi Rifle.

The Underwood 44 Remington Magnum 305 Grain Lead Long Flat Nose Gas Check (Does Not have the Warning)
Muzzle Velocity: 1325 fps
Muzzle Energy: 1189 ft. lbs.

Ammo without the Warning should be OK in the S&W
By the way, the S&W was designed around the 240 grain bullets, my Mod. 29 has shown exceptional accuracy with the 240gr bullets and my Lyman Devastator cast 260gr HP with gas check.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of this and appreciate the info as well. I recently picked up a 629 Classic 5" full lug and haven't ventured beyond Black Hills 240gr yet. I imagine the heavier Underwood loads would really be a handful. I can shoot a wheel of .44mag first and then 10mm seems pretty tame afterwards.

Here is a picture of the S&W Mod 29 and some of my cast RCBS 240 Silhouette and Lyman 260 Devastator HP.

Very nice - no lock, unlike mine. And 8+ inches of barrel almost makes those projs look kinda small although we know they ain't.

Some nice looking stainless pistols!  Someday I may add a 610 to my 10mm collection, I only wish they would have made it in the 8 3/8" Target configuration.  I only wish the stainless guns were available back when I was in the market 1978-79, Yes I was hooked by the Dirty Harry movies of the time period.  My local guy had the nickel 8 3/8" in the wooden display box in stock, and I jumped on the bandwagon.  I have taken a deer at 180 yards through the heart and lungs with that shiny beast...

I load those bullets with 16.2 grains of Blue Dot which run 1370-1400 fps.  In my prime, I could hit a quarter at 100 yards as it sits.  I have loaded with more Blue Dot but settled on this load for best accuracy from my gun! 8)

That is fine shooting & nothing like confidence to back it up.

I'm a wheel gun newcomer but am really enjoying it - right now more so than my plastic guns and AR builds. Long as we're showing, here's my recently acquired 629 and 686...

And yes a 610 is now high on the list!

I have been looking for a 610 too. I know a guy in town who has a 5" and I have him close to giving in to me :)
