Title: 1911 Magazines in 10mm
Post by: offsidewing on May 11 2014 08:23:30 PM MDT
Hey Guys! long time lurker, first time poster.

What brands/kinds of 1911 magazines for pistols chamberd in 10mm do you recommend for functionality and reliability?  I recently added a RIA Tactical II to the gun safe.  Looking to pick up four or five magazine and have not had luck with the ones that come with the pistol.

Thanks!

offsidewing, welcome to the forum!  There was a discussion somewhere about the various 1911 10mm mags.
Look through this post but I think there is another as well.

Best regards!

It goes against popular grain, but I have problems with Wilson.  I have had good luck with Tripp (Cobra Mags) and Check-Mate.

AlthoughI do not own CheckMate mags in 10mm, I have two in 45acp.  They are as good as it gets.  They make the mags for Colt and their Hybrid 7round mag is what I own.  It has performed flawlessly and the price is a bargain...  I paid about 17 dollars per mag.  A steal.

Go to their web site. They got them on sale for $17.05 I just order 2. My Colt Delta magazines work fine in it and vice versa.

They only charge $7.00 shipping to Fl.  witch is like $20 a magazine. That's good price for any magazine. They are normally $24.99

Frankly I think a lot of it has to do with how well the individual gun and mag work together, but my Kimber has zero issues with Tripp.  Have not tried anything else aside from the factory mag.

I will add that my kimber also likes the tripp mags but not the wilson combat mags. If you want to try wilson mags send me a pm and I can mail you a couple.

I have never had a problem with the Checkmate 10mm mags. Thousands of rounds through mine...

My Delta Gold Cup has yet to fail me with either of the 6, 8 Round Colt Magazines I have
But, if I didn't have the Colt Mags, I'd be running Chip McCormick / Shooting Star or TRI Mags

So the 10mm magazine saga continues.  Here'a the dilemma: my 10mm SD carry round is 165gr Gold Dot loaded to an OAL of 1.260 inches.  So far, both my RIA and Check-Mate mags bind after 3-4 rounds of this length are loaded into them.  I have a practice load of 165 Gold Dots that I load to am OAL length of 1.250 and these rounds load fine in both magazines.  The longer loads fit fine in the 1006 mags as well as glock 20/29 mags.  I know the hollow point on the gold dot has a wider cavity than other hollow points.  Has any one else experienced loading problems in 1911 magazine with gold dot loads with an OAL of 1.260?  i'm thinking the OAL of 1.260 and GDHP is problematic.  A gratious forum member is letting me try out a wilson mag too...

Have you been able to test the wilson mags?

I just got a pistol that came with 2 extra mags that have no markings except a star on the follower with 5 lines coming down from it.  Are these Shooting Stars?  Thanks...

I, too, had Wilson problems in my RIA 4.25, endless 3 point jams. The OE Metalform runs flawlessly.

Always amazing how varied the experiences with 10mm 1911 mags. I too have had great experiences with Wilson mags. Then last range trip, 2 where good, 3 where not. In my RIA 10mm FS the OAL is critical. It likes shorter.

And I've had problems with the Cobra mag, but never a Wilson. I gues it's the pistol you put them in. Reminds me when CZ mismarked to 10mm mags for their Dan Wesson line as .40 cal. Got five real cheap.

When I bought my Delta Gold Cup I ordered several extra mags from Colt and am still using them.  The DW ones I got with my DW are also still working great.

The Kimber marked mags I received with my ST II work great.  They are Metalform.

THis is what I'm finding. I've got a 10mm RIA commander on the way and have been researching mags for it.

Still haven't came up with a firm option on which mags to go with.

OK, I have been shooting 10mm for 24 years now
I have Delta Elite mags with and without bumpers, I think I have 5 and I have used 8 round Wilson Combat .45 mags for years and years
They all work flawlessly with the Delta I had and my Kimber Eclipse works with all of them-that's my .02 ;D

I can't remember if my DW mags were Metalforms or Checkmate.

I ended up with 2 Metalform 8-rounders. Should have them, and the new toy, in my hands by Monday. We'll see how they each run with 180gr rnfp from Freedom.

My RIA Tactical II did not like anything except Tripp magazines. Even the magazine that came with the RIA did not work well- slide did not lock back on last round.

All I can say is mine works fine. Maybe they fixed the problem? It's a pretty new gun.

Just picked up my Kimber Eclipse 10mm today on my lunch hour, and since it only came with one magazine this thread is of definite interest! Do they all pretty much have the same base plate?

K.

Nope, some have base pads, some are tapped for base pads, and some aren't. Followers can also be vastly different.

I have both the RIA and the Kimber Eclipse in 10mm. Both came with Metalform mags plus I ordered two from Armscor for a total of 4. All run fine in both. Steve

FWIW - all my experience is in a DW Razorback.  I've had good results with the factory mags, and flawless results with Wilson mags.  I just got a Tripp mag to try, but have not had a range day yet.

Mecgar make magazines for a lot of the big gun companies. Ruger,s&w, beretta.. just to name a few. I dont know about 1911 stuff though, never owned one.

I have the 4.25 and have continuing problems with the round flipping and pushing all the other rounds in the mag down.

If I stretch the springs, it alleviates the issue for a short while but within a few loadings its back to that.

I have some +10% delta elite springs coming to see if that fixes the issue. Based on the way it was jamming I would be willing to bet the mag cant get the round up fast enough for the slide to catch it and strip the new round from the mag.

Ill let you know if the new springs resolve it.
