One of my local smiths asked me if I was into 10mm.
Then he brought out a box of ammo for me and asked if I wanted to buy it.
I'll just leave this here...

Very nice. The box is in great shape! Almost makes you not want to disturb it.
Back in the early nineties I had picked up some Black talon in .40 and .45. I still have some of the .40. I wasn't into 10mm back then, but if I would have known I would have stocked up on the 10 in Black talon / Winchester Ranger talon, which was plentiful at my LGS.
Ah well..
Ah yes, the Winchester Black Talons, there was so much hype in the advertizing back then...
The 200 grains were a 980 fps / 426 ft/lb round from a 5" barrel, they did open up as advertised.
I used to carry my S&W1006 with them back in the day...I dispatched a wounded deer with the only one I ever shot, the bullet entered at the base of the skull on the right side, traverses across slightly under the spine and and then down the far side of the neck with a nasty spiraled track and came to rest in the top of shoulder blade on the left side.
Before I got my chronograph, I had read where others tested them in the 980 fps to 950 fps range. Found my handloads to easily outpace them and switched to my handloads. ::)
From my understanding, that box is not the original Black Talons, but the SXT's that came out after all the hype about them being able to penetrate vests. However, I have also read that the SXT, in no certain terms, meant Same eXact Thing (as the original Black Talons).
I, too, think that name brand dryer sheets, and the Black Talons, are overrated. I always buy generic, unscented ones.

Hahaha! That was the first thing I saw when I opened this. Was like "wtf, where's the black talons."
I have some coming (not generic dryer sheets) :P Just don't know how to best use them. Do you think upping the velocity before gel testing would be interesting? I plan to do a couple Chronograph shots out of each length for the sheet.
As I posted in a PM to IC, the Black Talon SXT, run about 980 fps and they have been know to shed the core even at that powder level. They have an exposed lead base, and the Black Lubealoy Coating on the bullet. They never penetrated the vest as far as I remember. ::)
I think the plan is to just do velocity both lengths and save the rest.

Sounds like plan. Test the originals. You can always experiment later on if you want.
I think Carrier21 pulled some Black talons and upped the velocities for his wax tube tests.
