Title: Using jacketed data for cast bullets?
Post by: BT8850 on March 11 2014 04:45:24 PM MDT
I know i'm on a bit of a post binge today but I had another question as I'm getting ready to try and load up my first cases tonight. I've read that you can use jacketed bullet load data for cast bullet loads. Is this true? I want to load my cast and powder coated bullets from the LEE .401 175g TC mold for 10mm and .40sw using Hogdons Longshot powder. My bullets weigh about 178 grains and are averaging .599-.602 long when coated, sized .401, and ready to load.

Hogdon's website shows only one load for 180g JHC using longshot in 10mm that being 8.5g/1221fps start - 9.5/1287fps max.

For 40sw they show 6.3/1013 - 7.5/1150 using 180g BERB FP.

The Speer reloading manual (#14 )that came with my reloading kit shows NO data for 10mm OR 40sw using longshot  :( :(

So, my question is, using my bullets as described above, is it safe to use the data listed on Hogdons website for 180g bullets using longshot??

You may want to start at the lower end and work up if you don't see any issues, you will want to inspect the spent brass for swelling, splits and the primer for flattening.

I have used some of the upper jacketed data with my cast bullets with the Red Carnauba Lube & previously the Red Zambini lube before I ran out!

Thanks for the reply Shadow. I'm glad to hear you've used the data for cast with good results, makes me a little more confident. Will take your advice and do a thorough check of the brass once I fire it. I'm expecting a small swell as I'll be shooting the glocks. Other than that I will keep a close eye! Hopefully loading tonight, didn't get time last night, will report back.
