Title: firing pin
Post by: krafcheck on January 27 2014 08:09:15 PM MST
i have read conflicting reports of the titanium firing pin.  some people sound knowledgeable and other well don't.  i have hear skelontized firing pins break.  which i can understand with holes in them.  i suppose that is true.

any 10mm fans have a titanium pin in there everyday carry?  i put in a 6 pound trigger spring and a 6 pound firing pin spring.  I had some FTF in the past.  none since the spring upgrade.  the titantium pin and safety plunger has always interest me.  Cool factor wise.

from wikipedia:
Commercial (99.2% pure) grades of titanium have ultimate tensile strength of about 434 MPa (63,000 psi), equal to that of common, low-grade steel alloys, but are 45% lighter. Titanium is 60% more dense than aluminium, but more than twice as strong[6] as the most commonly used 6061-T6 aluminium alloy.

Like those made from steel, titanium structures have a fatigue limit which guarantees longevity in some applications.[9] Titanium alloys have lower specific stiffnesses than in many other structural materials such as aluminium alloys and carbon fiber.

from what i gather depending on the pureness or what additional elements are added to the titanium will vary greatly on fatigue limit.

novel idea but at a cost of around 20% of a new glock i will pass.
