Title: anyone have a safe queen?
Post by: krafcheck on January 23 2014 07:34:39 PM MST
talked to a guy recently that bought a Kimber but seldom uses it because he doesnt want to scratch it!  Other than antique guns i just dont understand the idea of buying a gun and not using them.  its a tool begging to be used.  you want something to look at buy a painting.

i get why they do it because they spent a bunch of money. i got that same feeling when i was racing motocross.  everytime i bought a new bike or new helmet i was scared to crash because of the scratches. but finally got sick of it and would eventually just drop them to get it over with.  same thing with a new car.  my dad had a friend buy a jeep to take it off road but then he was scared of tearing it up.  My dad and his friends made fun of him constantly.  he finally got sick of it and took a sledge hammer to the back panel.

I don't have a safe queen. But, I have a Henry Big Boy in 44 that hangs beside my fireplace. It gets used but lightly. I like shooting my AR much better than the Henry, but it does look nice hanging on the wall. It is too pretty to keep in the safe :D

I got an old M1 Garand that has been hanging on my wall for the last 15 years and haven't shot it since Clinton left office.  :))

(I take it down once a year, check the lube, and run an oil patch through the barrel)

I hate to admit it, but yes, I have one that is STILL unfired after almost 10 years

A big no here! As a matter of fact, I don't let any of them get off easy taking every single one in a rotation. I do try to take care of them the best I can though.
If I ever buy a Glock I will for sure abuse it like it owes me money  :P

I'm close to the opposite of a collector. It bothers me to own something I don't expect to use for its intended purpose. That's why I own only a few decent guns.

So, no safe queens here.

Hi quality firearms are an investment.  I can see the wisdom of buying, and not using guns and using them as a retirement fund.

I shoot every gun I own.  My investment isn't a retirement program, its recreation.

Well, I can't justify owning a gun just to look at. I enjoy shooting my guns and enjoy cleaning  them after each use.

I shoot them all, some less than others. I let the old ones rest more.

My great-grandfather's Remington Woodsmaster 740 (.30-06). It gets new oil about twice a year...that's it.

No 'safe queens' but some are just lightly used, while others get much more 'airplay' so-to-speak.

I have a WWII Kar 98, with all the standard markings of the third Reich, that sits in my safe and doesn't get fired.

I do have ammo for it though.

I also have a Japanese WWII Arisaka Type 99 in 7.7 mm (chrysanthemum removed) that I don't shoot. I ammo working on getting some ammo for it.

Sounds COOL 49
The closet I've been to any WWII Arms was my Cousin's 1940(ish) P-08 in shooting (not collecting) condition

Several years ago, at my (then) local Pistol Range, a German SubGun
I believe it was a H&K, 9mm, but I can't remember the Model
It was from a Prop House in Burbank, CA, fully operational, and I was lucky enough to have a chance to shoot it
The Armorer was a Friend of mine, and he allowed me to run a full 30 Round Mag thru it on FA....very cool, very smooth
OH yeah, and there was a Nambu Pistol there too (didn't shoot it)
Can't remember which one though
Just remember how odd it felt in your hand

I read in one of the gun rags a few years ago, an MP40 was found in an old basement in Belgium with loaded mags. The gun rag said they shot the ammo through the gun using the mags with no issues whatsoever.

The Germans sure knew how to build stuff. Probably still do..

Can you say "Mercedes Benz" ?
I worked for them in the 90s and their Craftsmanship is unequaled

It seems that I'm in a definite minority but that's ok.

Having been married just shy of 40 years (to the same person no less) and not having any children, I've been in the enviable position of being able to buy at least two of every gun that I acquire. One for stuffing way back inside the "do not touch" safe and one for trading or shooting the bajeesus out of. It usually happens in reverse of that, I'll buy an interesting specimen shoot it and after falling in love with it I'll buy the keeper for the "DNT" safe.

Doing so has it's moments though. After seeing the neighborhood slowly deteriorate over the years and the crime severity skyrocket in Phoenix, my wife and I decided to move North to the high country. Hauling those safes up the mountains and the stress of transporting all of my guns separately is something I hope to never do again.

When I began the task of re filling each safe at the new house, I started with the "DNT" safe. The first gun to go into the safe was a prized nib S&W Performance Center 629 Carry Comp, followed shortly thereafter by it's twin. I could never bring myself to shoot the second one, lol. After the "DNT" safe was stuffed to the gills I happened across a box for one of the Carry Comps. I was positive that I'd just put both of them into the very back of the safe, out of sight & out of mind, where they'd be safe and sound. I looked inside the box to make sure that I hadn't accidentally put the wrong gun in the wrong box during the move but a Carry Comp was laying inside as it should be. When I finally emptied the safe far enough to reach the pair of Carry Comps , there I was and much to my surprise I might add, looking at two Carry Comps. I had no idea where that third Carry Comp came from, I sure didn't remember buying it! After searching through my records I discovered that I had bought it off of Gunbroker a couple years prior.
Yehaaa! I now had a shooter.

Oh, and the violent crime rate in Phoenix justified having a defensive weapon in each room. For tactical reasons, of course.  8)

With a safe full of do not touch guns, a house with a AK in every room, and not remembering buying a triplicate of a performance center gun, It seems that intercooler's bucks and 4949shooters money tree have been challenged, perhaps by MOUNTAIN's MONEY or WILLIAMS WALLET :o LOL Nice looking guns, we can only imagine what else is hiding in the DNT safe  :P

I about got a hernia moving that table, it's solid rosewood and weighs close to 400 pounds. Luckily the top unscrews.
