Title: Well I got my Hunter
Post by: schtoolee on December 18 2013 02:39:49 AM MST
Learning Moment-- Hopefully this will help the next newbie.

Picked up my Hunter on Saturday. And decided that I would wipe it down and check it out. All fine so far.
Then I decided to adjust the trigger. Ok that seems to work. I will get back to this later.

Next I put my Hunter back together and I don't remember if I had checked it before I took it apart, but now when I pulled the slide back, the hammer is now locked back. Just as if the safety was on. But it wasn't.

Took the gun apart and was able to push down on the sear and then the hammer would release. Well I figure
it must be working now. Put it back together and same thing happen. Great I have a single shot.

Well after I took it apart again for the 5th or 6th time I noticed that I could make the hammer lock up, by pushing down on the trigger bar. This is my first Tanfoglio, so it took me awhile to realize the significance of this. I then noticed that when it put the gun together, if I barley put any pressure on the hammer, I would hear a feint click, and then I could pull the trigger and it would work. Tried it several times same thing.

Still no clue, as to why my new gun wasn't working. I pulled it apart, and noticed that when it was locked up, the trigger bar was sitting at a bit of an angle. What the heck. After some more figuring, I figured how to remove the sear housing. Ok it is hanging up on the bottom leg of the sear. You would have thought that they would have caught this at the factory. Off to find a file.

Fortunately before I got anywhere with that, I stated to think what if the trigger could be stuck and is not letting the trigger bar go forward enough.

That is when I realized what I had done.

The whole problem, was between the trigger bar and the sear. I assume it is part of the safety mechanism.

When the slide is slid back it disengages the trigger bar from the sear, by pushing it down. And then when the slide is forward again, there are notches in the slide to let the trigger bar rise up again and engage the sear. The problem was the tip of the sear was to far forward, and would not reset properly.

Now here is my Doooh!!!! moment.

The trigger has 2 adjusting screws, one for pre-travel and one for a trigger stop. Once I realized what the problem was, I adjusted the pre-travel screw, which let the trigger go forward a bit, and all of a sudden the sear reset.

And low and behold after several hours of cussing and swearing. My new gun worked the way it should.

So if you find that your hammer is locked back on a Tanfoglio, with an adjustable trigger. Try undoing the adjusting screws, that you just got done playing around with first. It will save you several hours. ;)
It also might keep you from doing this to your hair.  ::) ;D

Is that a gray or black case? Looks really nice and I know you will love it. So it was brand new and you pulled it all the way down? To date I have never fully pulled one of my Tangfos down  :o

Black case. I took apart the slide. And I just removed the sear housing. But that is as far as I got.
I think I will try shooting it before I do any more.

Been there...Done that with my Match.  But, I did realize the issue before I started hunting for a file.

No way to get rid of all the take-up on that trigger without major gymnastics inside the gun.  But the adjustment does help.  And, at least on mine, it is creep-free, so it just feels like a high quality two stage trigger with a short first stage.
