So after having read through the G20 KaBoom thread and listening to other stories I'm a little leery of going to the Glock side. I have my Smith 1076 in a Jackass Rig for primary carry. However, I was thinking of a G29 for something lighter that I could tuck into some shorts to run out to the store or whatever. So given that I do practice with standard ammo offerings Remington, Georgia Arms, with the occasional box of Underwood TMJ and I plan to carry Underwoods as my self defense ammo I have some questions. I must admit I'm not a fan of them. I don't really like the feel of them. Nor am I in general a fan of striker fired. This would be more of a backup.
Should I get a Glock or not?
Gen 3 or Gen 4?
If yes, what upgrades should I do to it before I put the first round down the pipe?
Should I just forget it until someone comes out with a true compact 10mm and just use my S&W 4513 for those short trips?
It was my Glock that kaboom-ed.
I had to work my way through the information the case provided. I was wrong with my initial conclusions. The gun worked fine, but the cartridge case failed. It failed in a fully locked chamber. The gun did its job the way it was supposed to.
Stay away from PPU ammo, don't shy away from the Glock based on my experience. I'm going to get mine fixed and am confident that it can be a safe pistol. I also think I'll get a EAA Witness because the Glock is ugly and the chrome/wood EAA's look sweet.
The best part of the Glock is light weight, and recoil is nothing to fear.
Sorry if my post caused uncertainty. Decide based on your needs.

I have the G-29 but it is 2008 product befor the SF models. It has a good chamber, I use the Wolff Gun Springs non captive two piece recoil rod with the 21 lb spring set. It has worked very well even with loads that mimic UW and DT, where case expansion will be around 0.433" - 0.434" but no smiled cases. I trust mine.
I like my S&W's but carrying with them can be heavy, but worst would be if involved in a incident I'd hate to have it held as evidence where in may not be returned for whatever excuse or worst have it stolen should I have to leave it in the vehicle. :o
I'm still studying recoil options for the G-20SF 3rd gen, I don't like the captive recoil system but it has worked for the most part. :-\ May look at MGSL (match grade slide lock) also...
Glock owners have the Sprinco and DPM rod options. Has anyone tried those?
I have a Gen 2 G29 that has been a very solid and easy to shoot gun. Mine is completely stock as far as springs and connectors. It has Tru-Glo sites.
It runs my hottest reloads just fine. Glock is a solid platform for the 10mm as long as you agree with the design philosophies. Many here don't like the ergonomics or the safe-action.
I will qualify my comments though. My G29 rarely rides my hip. Only when I have on "sunday" clothes does it see holster time. Any other time is is a 10mm 1911 on my hip.
So any opinions as to Gen3 or Gen4? Would rather trust you guys as opposed to others opinions.
I don't have a gen3, but from what I hear they are just as solid as my gen2. And, if I needed one the gen4 would be fine with me too.

There is little aftermarket support for the Gen4 line. Higher tension springs are the main thing that are rare.
The grip on the gen4 are nice, they have a more agressive gripping surface, and the G29 will benefit from that feature.

I have the Gen 3 G29SF and find it a perfect fit for the situations the OP describes. I rarely carry the G29 as my primary CCW, but it makes an excellent BUG.
I'm still waiting for heavier recoil springs for the Gen 4. Until then, I'll just shoot hot ammo with the stock spring.
