I was on my second clip of ammo, and I touched off a round. You know the feeling of "That's Not Good". It sounded louder and I felt some blow by. There was a stinging in the hand, not severe, more like you get with a max load in the G20. The clip was at my feet.
:o :o :o >:( >:( >:(
My load was 11.5g of Power Pistol, 135g Nosler, and CCI large pistol primer. There was a full case head separation. I picked up all the rest of the brass and there was absolutely NO sign of pressure. Each and every load was weighhed with my RCBS chargemaster, the powder nearly fills the case, so double charge isn't possible. I've shot 12g without a problem, no smiles, no flattened primers.
The case was from Prvi Partizan ammo. The original loading was mild stuff. It was on its second reloading, the first was very mild at 8g of sr7625, the second was this kaboom.
Pistol needs to go to the shop.
I'm not certain I understand. Was the gun a G20? If so, was it a factory barrel?
It was a Gen4 G20, all factory, out of the box stock.
Just looking at the case, it appears to have been allowed to fire about 1/8" short of being fully chambered. The base of the cartridge was sheared at the extractor groove. The case itself remained in the chamber, but pulled out easily with my thumb and forefinger. It was balooned around the base, just like a bad smile, and about the same width. There is a piece I didn't find that sheared off, the exact shape as the feed ramp.
I had powder stains on my hand on the bottom, where the magazine fit, at the base of my index finger the exact shape of the mag release, and on my trigger finger right at the trigger saftey. The good oart is I'm no worse for the wear. I spent another couple hours shooting other guns.
Bummer!!!
Greg
Glad you are okay. Do yo have any pictures of the pistol and brass case?
Ouch. Sorry that happened. Sounds like a typical Kaboom.
Geeman sorry to hear of the situation, sounds like a case blowout but may be a casing related failure. ???
Prvi Partizan brass has been known to suffer cracked cases in the past...even on its original loadings.
Do you thing it damaged the frame of the G-20 gen-4? :o
I have the larger part ot the case, as well as the base that sheared off at my reloading bench, along with the pistol on my reloading bench. I don't think I'll get to it tonight, but pics will happen. the bulge runs around, perhaps 220 degrees around the case, flattened on the back side of the slide (opposite the ejection port), and the feed ramp portion and part close to the ejection port are missing.
The extractor plunger was free floating in the cutout area of the slide. I was able to do a field takedown as usual, but wouldn't re-assemble. There seems, at first glance, that the damage is minor, but I want to know how the thing allowed the firing pin to hit when not fully chambered.
Greg
Do you use a pass through sizing to recondition your brass? I tighter chambers brass can be expanded too low near the extractor and can cause a round to not chamber fully. Slightly out of lock up...but in battery enough to fire. ???
It could have been fully chambered to allow it to fire, but the stock recoil spring and barrel lock up, may have unlocked too soon with an early extraction while pressures were very high. I don't really like the captive springs on the Glocks, and it is my thinking that they don't apply enough pressure to maintain the best lockup. I could be wrong. ???
Check the frame for any signs of stress or cracks, good luck!
No plastic damage. The extractor is missing in action and beside alot of soot, it looks like that's the only issue as far as I can tell.
I haven't done the push through thing. My only press is my forster co-ax and it uses a jaw setup instead of a shell holder. I'm not sure it will work with what I have. Just not sure.
I do think I'll purge my brass of that Prvi Partizan stuff. I also think I'll shoot with a glove from here on. This could have been much worse.
