Title: Starline and Winchester primers?
Post by: Midwest Shooter on November 29 2013 08:06:06 PM MST
Guys,

New to reloading and I have a question. I saw on a different forum some guys saying that Winchester Large Primers won't work with Starline 10mm brass. Has anyone had any issues with Winchester primers not working with Starline brass? The fellow said they were to large to fit in the pocket. This was the first I heard so I wanted to get some other feedback since I was just getting ready to order a batch of Starline brass. Thanks in advance for any comments on this.

Midwest Shooter, welcome to the forum!  Winchesters are usually good to go!  CCI on the other hand are sometimes tight but will work!  I have crushed some CCI's seating them in some brass especially New Winchester Brass.

i have burned many winchester primers in starline brass over the years.  they tend to be a little hotter than other brands, so definitely work up.

good luck!

I don't claim to be an expert on reloading and giving advice is very limited but I believe that the Winchester primer is about the best out there. Have had a lot of problems with the CCI and Federal in small and large pistol primers. As far as Starline brass, lots of problems with 10MM and 44 Mag. Do have Starline brass in 45 Super an have had no trouble, but that brass is a couple years old. Good luck.

Have loaded CCI(1k) and now loading Winchester. No problems with either one so far. I try to buy Win or CCI because they work for me. I'm loading one at a time and priming with the Hornady hand priming tool; priming on a progressive press might give different results.

I have loaded 1k Win primers in Starline without any issue. I like to use CCI and have several thousand loaded without issue with those. YMMV and everyone has favorites. Buy what you can, when you can but remember that primers can/will change your load a little.

Running the Remington LPs in Starline... no problems.
So you have a few choices.

Guys, thank's for the feedback regarding the Winchester primers and Starline brass. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a problem before investing in some new Starline brass and finding out there was an issue.  :))

I've used the Winchester primers.  I can't say I noticed anything tighter than normal, even with new Starline brass.

The primers are hot.  Careful with 800x loads.  They build up pressure quickly with minor increases in charge weight with these primers as well as other magnum primers.  At least that seems to be my experience.
