Title: I had a thought...
Post by: Raggedyman on November 21 2013 02:21:22 PM MST
Maybe I shouldn't. Have a thought, that is, but it's too late.

I've got this mostly full box of 50 Speer .38 spl 135 gr Gold Dot "short barrel" load that I don't really plan to do anything with because they tested poorly in gelatin at low temperature (videos below, if you care). So I had the idea of pulling them and loading them in .357 mag. Obviously just a little bit more velocity gets them opening just fine but I wonder if they will open TOO much at .357 speeds and come apart or fail to penetrate deeply enough for defense. Only one way to know for sure what the result will be, but what are your predictions?

Being bonded the should stick together for the most part but as seen with others the petals will roll beyond their maximum at some point then continue to roll back to a smaller diameter.  It is reasonable to think that some petals my shear off under rotational deceleration or if structures such a bone is encountered!

I bet I could push them fairly hard in the 9x25Dillons even though they are heavier than 125 grains.  :o

I like the cut of your jib, sir. That would be pretty cool. How many do you want? PM me your address again, please.

They open nicely at the 1070 fps, at Magnum velocities they might turn inside out!  LOL
