While you are on the posting screen you have navigation buttons to help with your posting pictures or inserting links; see the green circle in the picture below. The first button is for inserting picture urls - the second is for inserting urls

You are better off uploading your pictures to a site like "Photo Bucket" to host your pictures, then obtaining their URL's to have them shown on the websites....Photo bucket has these buttons to get the links, I use the Basic button to copy the links for the pictures.

This is a good post. Some of us forget that these interfaces are not universally understood and intuitive.
I would like to elaborate a bit on the url tag.
There are two ways to use this tag.
The first is as The_Shadow mentions:
[url]http://www.google.com[/url]
Using this format, will result in the text of the URL becoming a hyperlink. When you click the hyperlink it will open a new browser window or tab for that address:
http://www.google.com (http://www.google.com)
Alternately, you can format your inserted hyperlink to apply to text:
Check it out at [url=http://www.google.com]Google[/url]
By using the "={website}" format inside the square brackets then you get a word in your post that becomes the hyperlink:
Check it out at Google (http://www.google.com)
Which method you use is up to you. In general, I tend use the first method, which displays the entire link to the user if it is something I meant for them to visit. I use the second when I am providing a reference that some people may wish to read, but others might not care.
Added a little more info in the first post to include the buttons used in Photobucket that copies the link info of your pictures.

Just a side note, if you have pictures on a FaceBook account or other location, you can right click on the picture, the pop up menu should show info to copy the URL for the image.

After you copy the URL you can, press the Insert Image Button and paste that link, using the Control key and V Key to paste or copy it where the blinking cursor is between the IMG code, to the forum.

Deeslayer, if you have your picture showing on FaceBook, right click on the picture, a menu will pop up, you can click on the copy link address, this is copied to your computer's clipboard.
Then while you are in the forum, click on the insert image button, you will see the IMG code applied in you post, you can place your mouse cursor between the brackets, then press the control key and the V key on your keyboard at the same time to insert the address in between those brackets as shown. Another way is to place the mouse cursor in between those brackets and right click again, a menu will pop up and you will see a paste option, click that and the address should fill in between the brackets.
When you post or preview your picture should show up.

One of the problems with many of the free image storing sites is that if the image is not accessed periodically, they will delete the image. If you have a Gmail account, you have access to Google Drive and you can store your photos there. There is a way where you can post photos hosted from it. I tend to do that with all my photos these days. The thing to remember though is that it is not very friendly (from both a viewing and a bandwidth perspective) to those on small screens (e.g. phones) for you to post full resolution images in your posts. It is a lot nicer if you post a thumbnail image (of around 320px max) and then just a link to a full resolution image.
EDITED 2021.10.02 -- Google has a habit of changing their system periodically and the "new features" often end up disabling a feature that you have previously relied upon. The method that I was using when I originally created this post is no longer possible.
Many people used TinyPic.com, but they discontinued their service / went out of business.
Quite often, forums will prevent you from editing your previous posts after they are of a particular age. Apparently that is not the case with this site since the post that I'm editing is nearly 6 yeas old. I would like to thank the site owner for not restricting this since *some* of us actually like to add additional info to old posts, change the photos to valid links, or even correct wording / spelling on old posts that are possibly years old.
Or run your own webserver.... :D

This is just a note to say that Photos that are not showing up in previous post, are more than likely because the hosting site changed their third party hosting or the member has canceled the account. Some have small pictures or broken links where the picture would have been. ::)

I use pay a yearly fee to use Photobucket to host all my pictures that were posted here. They recently had a change of service, so before they quit allowing the third party hosting, I switched to a new free service. :))
To prevent loss of the pictures, I went through every (those who know me here know there are thousands of pictures posted by me) where I had then posted and changed the addresses of each and every picture. This was done to preserve and maintain the validity of the various post for the future. Yes it was that important to me as one of the moderators here on 10mm-firearms! ;D
There are many photo hosting services out there, good luck as you choose for what they offer...
