Ejector broke on my RIA1 10mm after 250 rounds. Its on the way back for repair.

I probably would have just put a new one in.
Sucks that it broke...Any pictures of the break? It is an odd part to fail on a 1911, especially so early.
Can an after market(upgraded) ejector be installed with out having to modify it very much? I'm no gunsmith, but so far I've been able to do most of the upgrades to my guns, and it sounds like this might be my next project. ( I too have a RIA 10mm). :o
They generally go in pretty easily. I would say 9/10 just drive out the pin, pull the old one, put in the new one and put the pin back. The 10th one needs 5 minutes of file or emery cloth work.
They quoted 3 week max turnaround. The ejector is held in by two posts a larger diameter in front and a smaller diameter post at the rear and appears to be a press fit. Both posts sheared off level with the frame.
There should be a very small pin you will find in the rail. That is the traditional way of anchoring the ejector, but I was told by a smith who spent some time with Wilson that some folks are now using Loctite. If you have a pin, the replacement ejector may not have a groove in which case you will need to mark the leg and file a small groove before replacing the pin. Check on line for a 1911 takedown to see the set-up. Dawson's old catalogs had the full breakdown.
I have several 1911 45's and 1911 10mm which have fired several thousand rounds. There is no excuse for a broken ejector. I sent it back so they might figure out what happened and fix it.
My RIA1 is on the way back, should be here tomorrow (the 12th). They replaced the ejector, recoil spring and main spring and sent it to there gunsmith for a tune up. The made no comment as to why the ejector broke.
John what loads are you shooting how does the chamber look smooth, rough, good?

Ejectors can have stress risers sometimes from machining.
A close up of the broken half can tell allot if it was brittle fracture or fatigue fracture.
But anyway hope all goes well.
I've been running 180gr jacketed bullets about 1000 fps for break in. The origional recoil spring was 16lb, I'll measure the new spring when the gun gets here tomorrow. The chamber is smooth. I sent the broken piece of the ejector back with the gun. We have been getting a lot of rain here so I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to the range, hopefully in the next few days.
John, glad to hear that you're getting your pistol back. I too have a RIA 10mm, which I have yet to put a single round through. I talked with Sean at ARMSCOR, and he suggested that I install a 20# recoil spring and a 23# mainspring, which I did once they arrived from ARMSCOR. I also installed an EGW fbfp stop. I'm not sure what, if any, effect these mods will have towards reducing the chance of an extractor failing, but I guess I'll find out. Let us know how the range time goes. 8)
Recieved my 10mm back from RI. The origional recoil spring was 16lb the new one is 20lb. I wont be able to get to the range for a couple of days because of the large amount of rain weve had.
Finally got to the range fired 150 rounds no problems. we'll see if it makes it past the second 250. I suspect this was just a fluke.
