Title: Got some Hawk 200 grain bullets coming
Post by: Ramjet on July 02 2013 06:15:26 PM MDT
I have used Hawk Bullets for several, years they are really dead soft jacket with soft lead core usually heavy for caliber bullets. I have had tremendous success with them Ina number of calibers on game great expansion and weight retention. So I called and asked if they could make some 200 grain soft jacket FP with the .025" jacket and being the small responsive company they are they quoted me a 150 pc price and  soon I will have a bunch to test with.  If these bullets performs like the other calibers it should be an awesome hunting bullet.

If that all goes well I believe I'll put in an order myself.  If it's no bother I would like to see some close up pics of them.  Did they suggest a time frame when you will receive them?

I didn't ask but generally within a couple of weeks..........usually.

When I get them I will get some macro pics and post them I will also share load data velocity and hillbilly wet newsprint tests comparing to 200 grain WFN Hardcast.

I can tell you if these perform anything like the 475 or 30 caliber we should have real winner.

My plan is to use my Longslide on Elk this fall. This bullet should be great if it performs like the other Hawk bullets I have used in the past on game.

I upped my order to 250 bullets so if anyone is doing testing in gelatin I can spare a few for results and pics.

Got word today these bullets with special thinner jacket will be to me next week. The expansion should be excellent My plan is to load over Longshot then chronograph them and then do some wet pack comparative testing along side 200 grain WFN.

Looks like they will be constructed with pure lead with .012" jacket. So I would expect good weight retention but am curious as to the penetration.

I'm also now curious what the jacket thicknesses of the offerings by Hornady, Nosler, Speer, and Sierra.  I know there would be nothing apples to apples about it, still I'ld like to know.

Yes indeed I will compare performance in wet pack with proven rounds from a few other guns.

I think it would perform on elk at 40 yards and under. With well placed shot.

Loaded 50 rounds last night had to setup the lock and load for 10mm anyways so ran a few of these first.

Waiting on rain to stop so I can chronograph at the same time.

Load

8.1 grains of Longshot over the 200 grain bullet.

I weighed 5 and they all ran from low of 199.7-200.1 grains.

They look good.  I'll be watching to see if they perform as good as they look.

I'll also be watching more specifically to see what they do in relation to pressure signs and velocity sitting over the 8.1gr of Longshot.

Which primer and what COL to you plan on using?

Bullet only O A L .639"
Cartridge OAL 1.257"
CCI 300 Primer
Case head expansion measured ahead of the groove .424"
Powder 8.1 Grains of Longshot.
New Starline Brass
Gun LW 6.25" Barrel with Longslide upper on Model 21 SF (no muzzle brake thread protector in place.

5 FEET FROM CHRONOGRAPH 5 shot string.
Hi-1266 fps
Lo-1250 fps
Ave-1256 fps
E-16 fps
Std Deviation-8 fps

Both bullets expanded over 1/2 nose forward.

Both shot into water soaked phone books 5 yards from the Chronograph.

One shed the Jacket The jacket was recovered at 8" and weighed with the core 100% weight retention.  200.0 grains

One did not 100% weight retention 200.1 grains.

Both penetrated 16" into the phone books with good disruption of the paper.

The bullet on the far right is 225 Hawk fired from a 358 Winchester.  14.75 inches of penetration and was traveling 2380 FPS from the BLR. I have taken Elk with this bullet DRT. Just for comparison

Fairly impressive.  Glad to see you were able to test penetration and expansion starting out at an honest 1250 FPS.  Except for the jacket separation they certainly aren't over expanding.  I feel they might be a bit more toughly constructed for a bullet designed to expand for my tastes, but all in all am still happy with the results you showed.

Thanks for sharing with us! 8)  Especially being a bullet design we've never seen tested before.

Yes I would agree.  This would be short distance Elk round in which case I am convinced under 50 yards it will do the job on broadside shots. But I was surprised that it did not expand more because of my experience with the rifle bullets.  The jacket separation was no big deal in that the core of that one remained the same shape as the one with the retained jacket.  I bet this would do well on hogs?

It is interesting but I shot cast RCBS 190 grain Gas Checked bullet from my 30-30 into the media today as well and that bullet was expanded to .49" but penetrated over 20" and only retained 117 grains but was running 1800 + FPS.

The 358 was expanded too over 1.00" on its widest plain and the wet phone books really opened up with that bullet. Of course i knew that having taken game with that bullet before.

I think this would be dandy bullet for a 10mm carbine with velocities around 1600 FPS.

Thanks for the test you did.

You might have found the perfect hog bullet in 10mm.

Thanks for your efforts.

Me too.  I think the jacket thickness is just too much for a heavyweight 10mm 200gr bullet.  Especially because the bullet jacket isn't skived to help promote more and more uniform expansion at that velocity level.

QuoteI think this would be dandy bullet for a 10mm carbine with velocities around 1600 FPS.
I thing you're right.  For Carbines and T/C Contenders in the 1500-1750 FPS range it is probably a great performer.  I certainly don't know for sure, but highly suspect.

I actually think the jacket is ok the core seems hard I do not have hardness tear but it seems pretty tough.

Good Point, definitely a possibility there.  Don't they use pure lead though?  Not sure.

Yes. Pure lead cores.

I would love to drive this bullet around 1600+ and see how it would perform.

But even though the expansion was limited weight retention was good and it performed slightly better than the 200 grain Hardcast I tested that day. Larger diameter about the same depth of penetration but the disruption of wet PAC was greater with the Hawk.
