Title: Gen 2 G17 Failure to Extract
Post by: Bro KV on June 30 2013 12:20:41 PM MDT
So I went shooting with my BIL yesterday and he just picked up a Gen 2 G17. It is failing to extract about every tenth round. The case is stopped 3/4 of the way out of the chamber with the next round in the mag pushing up on it from the bottom.  All the FTEs happened with WWB 115gr factory ammo. We did run 50 of my reloads through it with zero failures.

He took it to a Smith locally who charged him $50 and said there was nothing wrong with it. I told him that I would look at it, my guns nothing experience comes from 1911s which are different but the same theory.

Is this a regular occurrence?  Can someone direct me to the parts to replace if any?  Do you guys need more info or pictures?

Thanks
Jeff

Cleaning and inspecting are where I would start...
removal of the extractor setup is where I would start.  Detail inspection, checking the extractor hook for wear or damage, if all looks good then cleaning, light lubing and re assembly.

However the problem may reside with the WWB ammo, the powder/pressure curve could be holding the casing expanded to the chamber walls as extraction is occurring.

Examine the magazine to see if the next round is sticking up too high and kicking the casing being extracted off too soon.

So upon disassembly and inspection I found the extractor is broken. New part on order and I am giving the broken piece to my BIL to take back to the Smith and get his money back. Thanks for the help Shadow

Something so simple!  That so called GunSmith needs to go to some schools or he just blew your B.I.L. off! :o

Pretty sure he just blew him off. I told him to take the broken extractor back to the guy and if he really "missed" it then I'm sure he will try and compensate him. Just to keep a good rep.
