Hi
New to this fourm. Not new to handguns or 10 MM's. I use to have a Glock 20. Never could get use to the way it felt in my hand. didn't feel like a 1911........ so I got me one!!! I just traded an AR-15 I didn't have much in for a stainless Delta Elite. Any DE owners out there know anything special I should know about them ..... feel free to jump in.
I just found this site and it looks like a good one.
HogSlayer, Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your DE acquisition! Just understand that the chamber is not the most supported and some higher impulse rounds my show bulged cases and in some instances can cause a case blow out. Therefore look for ammo which is suited for the chamber support.
Best regards!
Shadow
Thanks
I reload and cast my own bullets so will load what the pistol Likes. Half the fun of a new pistol is developing new loads for it.
Tried to shoot some reloads i had developed for the G20 in the DE and most of them would not go into battery till I set the sizing die down
firmly on the shell holder. Then all was well.
Congrats!
I have been wanting a Delta fort a long time now.
Start by posting pics :)
Familiar story Hogslayer.....I got my Delta, SS like yours, in a trade for an AK. Always liked 1911s, with a weakness for Colts. ;D
You've already found out the chamber is tighter than a Glocks'.....so is the bore. As I remember my G20 slugged .401 and the Delta ~ .399. Just mentioning this as you said you cast your own. FWIW, Hornady's manual used a Colt Delta as their test gun in load development. Congrats and welcome to the forum.
Welcome to the forum.
You have heard some good advice already. All I would add is this: Don't go changing your gun because you read it was a good idea somewhere on the internet, including here. Change your gun if you have an issue you need to fix.
I say this because of a lot of people end up here and read what we have done "hot-rodding" our guns. They become convinced very quickly they must run a 24 lb recoil spring, a 26 lb mainspring, a flat bottom firing pin stop and have to get a ramped barrel or their gun will imminently self-destruct if they use "real" 10mm loads. (I fell into this trap).
Do head the warnings on Underwood ammo to not fire in a Delta with a stock barrel configuration. Otherwise, shoot and have fun. If you have a problem, then consider some of the alterations we run. Most of my 10mm guns have returned to pretty near stock these days.
I also shoot lots of lead. We have raging debates from time to time about plain base vs gas checked bullets for 10mm. And we all agree, nothing beats a 10!
Thanks to all that offered advice , keep it comming. Had to take pictures with my other camera. The Iphone's picts were too large.
The only mods I am going to do is remove a plate under the saifty. It makes it way to difficult to rack the slide with that on there.
The previous owner has installed a comp that actually works, so will leave that for now. Pistol kicks like a 45 ACP (and I have always
thought the 45's recoil is a powder puff). Can't attach any pictures. camera only goes down to 1.2 megs, any one have a reduction program for pictures?
Hogslayer
Hogslayer, open a Photobucket account (free up to so many Gb) upload and then you can host your photos from that site. It has editing options also, very nice way to setup you stuff.
Thanks Shadow
going to try to post some pictures from photo bucket

Well since I am asking a lot of questions might as well keep it up. I would like to shoot 40 cal in my DE. Anyone ever done it?
I know that i would have to change the barrel. Have heard that they will feed out of the 10 MM mag. the difference in recoil spring
from what I can figure out is only 1/2 lb? 18.5 to 18# Worth changing?? I shoot 38 super the same way in my 9MM . Just had
to change the barrel and the mag to do that. Pretty cool.
Thanks
Well crud it seems to have put every photo that I have in photobucket on there. I guess you get to see a lot of guns I have had in the past and some I have now too.
hogslayer I fixed the image link for you...You can copy the direct url link and paste between the [IMG /IMG]http://it using the IMG button on the left side second row of buttons. (http://10mm-firearms.com/Themes/core/images/bbc/img.gif)
Now about the 40 conversion, basically just a barrel swap, recoil springs could be lightened but may not be necessary.
The 1911's barrels and bushings just need to fit the slide & frame you are using. The cartridges usually feed from the same magazine without issue.
Thanks Shadow
I went back and changed a couple of things too. On the picts.
I have heard that the locking lugs are a little different (as in larger) on the DE's than on some of the other 1911s. Do they make DE specific barrels or just any old colt 1911 40 cal designed to drop in ......?
Told ya I was full of questions.
Not an expert and don't know on the lug size difference, if any, but most 1911 barrels require 'some' fitting. 'Some' varies greatly. ;D
In example I bought a 'semi fit' Bar Sto for my Delta....supposedly they will drop in 7 of ten times by advertising. Mine was one of the three....
Thanks EdMc
Will do some checking around and see what I can come up with. It is kind of nice shooting 9MM and 38 Super out of the same 1911.
Looking forward to the 10 and 40 thang too.
In fact I am looking forward to my first pig (with the 10MM). Hope to get it done this next weekend.
There are people, even some here, that shoot 40 and 10mm from the same barrel. Some say it works fine.
On the other hand....

I personally agree with the author of the above article and don't recommend it.
A standard Delta takes a 1911 bushing barrel. You will want a different bushing too. As has been mentioned...The semi-drop in usually require minimal fitting of the hood, no fitting of the upper lugs, and minimal fitting of the lower lugs. The bushing will require minimal fitting to the frame. If you are handy with a file and emery cloth, it will take you a short amount of time.
A "match" fit barrel will require a bunch of filing of the hood, probably some filing of the upper lugs, and bunch of fitting of the lower lugs. A match bushing will have to be fit to the barrel and to the frame. They cost a bit more, and if you fit them wrong, they are no better (and may be worse).
I like the Kart Easy Fit barrel. It has tabs that still give good lockup, but don't require you to fully shape things. They are good barrels and are really intended for just the type of project you are after.

That said, your gun is a comp gun. All kinds of interesting things may have been done to the slide as there are a number of different lockup systems for compensated 1911's. You will need to figure out if a standard bushing will still work with your gun before any of the above applies.

I have been seriously considering a Kart easy fit barrel. My comp is held on by a two piece guide rod and not the bushing as in most cases. I don't "think" any mods were done to the slide. Will let you know after some more inspection. Other than that do you think that there are any other issues to contend with? If it gets to be too much of an issue I just may have to get another 1911 that is designed for the 40. Damn I would hate to have to have another 1911!!!
Thanks
Have a look at THIS THREAD (http://10mm-firearms.com/10mm-semi-auto-handguns/10mm-eye-candy/).
Nice, real nice. I think I already have the 10 will just look for a 40. Keep your eyes open for me.
thanks
