Hello members
I have a less than 1 year old completely stock G20 Gen 5 and it runs flawlessly thus far.
I have shot some weaker factory loads when i first got the pistol but I handload for all my firearms and now developed loads for this 10mm Gen 5 using 200 gr XTP, 180 grain XTP, Montana Bullets 200 grain WFN hard cast and Bayou Bullets 180 Grain coated TC bullets. I'm using Longshot for 180 bullets and AA#9 for 200 grain bullets. All loads are at or close to Load data max.
My question is in regards to case ejection distance and recoil forces to the pistol. from what I've read and heard Shooting 10mm its common for cases to fly into the next zip code ( like 25 + feet easily ). I've read here about changing out RSA etc. for heavier loadings etc. Other than looking for brass in the next state it isn't necessarily a problem but compared to other Glocks this seems bit much. the main concern i have is not so much the ejection distance but if the recoil is or would cause undo wear and tear to the firearm? I hate to mess with anything because it runs perfectly stock but if I'm going to damage it or wear it out quickly I'm open to changing some things so long as it doesn't hurt the reliability.
On a FYI notes about the Gen 5 for those that are wondering about the new generation i can say this.
Barrel has noticeably deeper "groves" .
Chamber has complete support of the case.
Inserted rounds in the barrel have less play than older models meaning it appears to be a tighter chamber.
Also have not seen any signs of bulges or smiles etc.
Will be ordering a KKM barrel this week for it now that they are available.
sorry I'm long winded here but its my first time posting and wanted to give some basic info on loads and such.
So what do you knowable ladies and gents think? run it as is and dont look back or make some kind of changes?
With one exception I only change parts on factory guns to address a deficiency that has manifested, not ones I think may manifest.
The lone exception is a flat bottom firing pin stop in a 1911.
If your gun is running to your satisfaction with the stock setup, I would leave it be. There are definitely other opinions.
I'm in that same thought camp, If its not broke don't fix it. However i felt i should reach out and get input from others. I promise my blonde hair stops at the roots but i have had a blonde moment once or twice.
I figure the engineers at Glock likely know best.
Thank you sqlbullet, I appreciate the experienced advice. from what i can tell the Gen 5 appears to be step up from previous generations in terms of the barrel at least. perhaps maybe even the spring but it appears to be same as a gen 4 best i can tell.
Better barrel, it runs perfect....no problem, don't invent one. I'm worried about getting a new gen 5 because I have heard they have issues. My gen 4 is awesome. But I want a gen 5. Like others said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it....but being your gun, you make the rules.
Thanks for posting will965,
I've have and had few different Glocks Gen 3's and Gen 4's ( 9mm, 45 and 40 S&W ) now the 10mm and compared to them and a gen 4 G20 my Brother owns and I've shot
i compared the barrels and chambers. I had a choice between G20 gen 4 and the new Gen 5 when i purchased and rolled the dice for the Gen 5. Honestly I really like the Gen 5 G20 best, so far. I've not experienced
any kind of problem other than having to look 2 states over for brass. LoL. I've got about 1000 rounds though it so far is all but not anything but good to say so far on it. I like the front slide serrations, barrel and chamber appearance as well as it not having finger groves in the grip.
That makes me happy, I really want one. But I think the FN 510 is next..
I really went back and forth between Gen 4 G20 or G40 (proven) vs the new Gen 5 G20. I decided against the 40 though i liked the long sight radius because i chest carry a lot and was concerned the longer slide and barrel would get in the way of pack straps etc. I also wanted to be able to ccw the gun if need when traveling to and from hunting stopping for groceries and suchalong the way.
so ruled out the G40. Went G20 Gen 5 vs Gen 4 mostly because i liked the lack of finger grips cut in gen 4 and liked the front slide serrations. took a chance and am so far happy.
Nothing wrong with FN. for that matter nothing wrong with a G20 Gen 4 at all. I've spent time behind SIg's, colts, Barretta's, FN and Glocks in the Marines and woods. I for whatever reason have always preferred Glocks. besides a couple Ruger revolvers they are only handguns i own now. simple, hold plenty of problem solvers and just seem to work under any kind of conditions. Water, sand, mud or snow. they just go bang when you need them.
Well for my S&W1006 year 1990 I stepped up the recoil spring to a Wolff Gun Springs extra power 22lbs and it helped to manage the ejected brass much better. Its a non captive spring which I have seem a slightly better in battery lockup as well.
My Glock 29 factory captive spring was slipping off the guide and Glock sent a replacement. But it also launched brass a good distance. I changed the recoil system to a Non Captive Wolff Gun Springs steel dual rod with 21 lbs spring set. Runs absolutely flawless as set up. I do also have the 23 lbs set of springs but rarely use them except for some testing extremes!
Measured Spring setup:
Glock 29 spring test Wolff Gun Springs 21lb RSA installed
It takes 6lb 4oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 21lb 3oz at lock open
Glock 29 spring test Wolff Gun Springs 23lb RSA installed
It takes 7lb 1oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 23lb 5oz at lock open
Glock 29 Factory spring test
It takes 4lb 5oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 16lb 10oz at lock open
My Glock 20 I also swapped out the recoil system to a Non Captive Wolff Gun Springs steel dual rod with 22 lbs spring set. Runs absolutely flawless as set up. I do also have the 24 lbs set of springs but rarely use them except for some testing extremes!
Measured spring setup:
Glock 20SF spring test Wolff Gun Springs 22lb RSA installed
It takes 6lb 4oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 22lb 9oz at lock open
Glock 20SF spring test Wolff Gun Springs 24lb RSA installed
It takes 7lb 6oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 24lb 1oz at lock open
Glock 20Sf Factory spring test
It takes 5lb 3oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 18lb 0oz at lock open
Glock 20Sf Factory spring test
It takes 5lb 3oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 18lb 0oz at lock open
Glock 20SF spring test Wolff Gun Springs 22lb RSA installed
It takes 6lb 4oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
Full retraction at 22lb 9oz at lock open
22-Slightly over a pound difference 1lb 1oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
24-Slightly over a two pound difference 2lb 3oz to start the slide to move from the locked position
22-Slightly over a 2 pound difference 2lb 9oz at lock open
24-Slightly over a 6 pound difference 6lb 1oz at lock open
Newer Glocks had a change to the slide where the recoil spring sits which is large than the previous models and don't think Wolff Gun Springs make anything for the newer models. I'd have to go look if they started. Some used an adapter to take up that difference of these newer slides to use other RSA's.

Thank you again The_Shadow for responding to a posting of mine.
I believe i read your great experienced knowledge on this somewhere in a posting before but appreciate the information and can tell you've explored this in depth.
when i read where you said captive spring was slipping it caught my eye because when i took the gun down to run brush though it shooting this weekend i noticed that it was up at the top notch and at the time took note of it but thought maybe i had accidentally put it there earlier without noticing it. ill be keeping an eye on that for sure now. My main reason for starting the thread wasn't because i was having any problem but was struck as to how far it was tossing brass and wondered if that was abnormal or sign of potential problem in the future.
Im not against changing things but not sure on parts for Gen 5's and if there isn't any problem or potential one I'm fine staying stock. just wasn't sure.
Huntchick, I do believe the newer Glock models gen 4 / gen 5 have addressed a lot of things.
Good luck and enjoy the forum!
Thank you again for the information and appreciate the in-depth knowledge you have. I saw earlier where you stated about no ?drop in? parts / springs for G5 yet. I agree and until recently KKM didn?t offer a gen 5 barrel yet either. I?m glad to hear you feel the Gen 5?s have likely addressed those issues. Im going to feel more comfortable now and run it stock except for a KKM barrel.
I'm in the "if it ain't broke , don't fix it " group...
I'd sit back and just keep shooting the gun and see how it goes. Sounds like you have some of the loadings under control, so enjoy.
Just wondering if you use a gas check on the hard cast head? ( not that needed if proper hardness and sized for barrel )
Thanks tommac919
On pistols I'm not a big fan of messing with triggers or springs unless i have too. Just was taken back by the distance it tosses brass since i got the 20.
I'm used to 9mm 45 acp and larger revolvers. was just concerned might be something potentially wrong or needed changing with higher loadings.
I'm not in the camp of Hot as i can shoot on verge of blowing up but like accuracy near the top of caliber loads. Look forward to getting new Chrono so i can
dial in the 180 grain coated bullets safely. only have used cast bullets in revolvers so this is my first time loading with a "coated" bullet or cast in semi auto.
I thought the Bayou 180 gr. TC would be be more reliable shape than a WFN and in 180 gr. at 16 BHN hardness good for most game and anything else.
once i figure out a accurate safe load ill see how it does on pentation and if it deforms much or ok. I put a post on the hunting thread in hopes someone there might have some
experience on game with that type bullet.
